Review

'If Ray Mears isn't a Great Living Englishman, then goodness me, who is? The man is great, and he doesn't even begin to know how great he is. Ray is a persuader, pragmatist and populariser in the Durrell-Attenborough-Bellamy tradition.' (Robert Crampton, The Times Magazine )

'Ray Mears is a bushman first and foremost and really can survive in any extreme environment. I can't think of a better companion in a crisis.' (Tim Lewis, GQ )

'The foremost purveyor of bushcraft in the UK today.' (Geographical Magazine )

'Ray Mears is a genius'

(Time Out )

'Give the man a couple of twigs, a flint and a curved knife and he is transformed into a poet.'

(The Times )

Product Description

Ray Mears has travelled the world for much of his life learning and teaching wilderness skills. Now he reflects on his experiences in some of the most remote and beautiful places on Earth along with his own stunning photographs of the landscapes and peoples he's encountered.

Fascinated by photography from an early age, each of Ray's pictures captures an instant of life, a powerful experience he has compared to hunting - to releasing the trigger on a rifle.

This book reveals our dramatically changing planet and inspires us to look more closely at the changes around us. See our vanishing world through the eyes, ears and camera lens of Ray Mears.

I love this book. It is Ray doing what he is best at; conveying how different people live around the world.
Each double-page spread has a photograph with a caption explaining what is going on with either the skill or craft being shown, the landscape where the people live or the feelings he had when taking the photograph.
Photography is an art that is personal to yourself behind the camera and if you can convey those feelings to others through that art then you are doing well. This book conveyed lots of feelings to me and I shall enjoy dipping in and out of it for a long time.

This Ray Mears book is different to what the casual admirer might expect. It isn't a bushcraft/survival manual, but a look at vanishing culture around the world. The insight Ray writes with each photo is good, but the book is let down by the poor photos (or reproduction of photos?). Sorry Ray but you're not going to make a photojournalist.

It is a good book, but the text is insubstantial, and the pictures poor. So on balance I wouldn't recommend it as it is neither beatiful enough to be a coffee table book, nor involved enough to be a decent read.

If you are wanting to buy a book that will teach you how to survive in the wild then this is not the book for you, try "Essential Bushcraft". This is instead a book which looks into the way that bushcraft is used in different countries by the different indigenous peoples and how practice has changed, and sadly even disappeared, (hence the title) in the time that Ray has been working in this field.
The pictures each tell a story which is explained in a small caption on the page, either of what is happening or of a memory that the picture holds for the writer, and the different subjects are grouped into categories similar to those in his other books, eg Fire, Shelter, Water etc.
Over all the book is more a look into Ray Mears' life and experiences than a guide to survival, but this was something that I enjoyed greatly, especially reading the introduction that tells the story of how Ray first got into the work that he does now. It really whetted my appetite for an autobiography. Fingers crossed he will release one at some point.
