Well it's true if you're patience enough eventually that vinyl rarity which finacially is way out of your league(and you foolishly sold dirt cheap many years ago) will eventually come out on c.d with better sound and this is another example (now if only they'd release 'seasons changing' by Byzantium!) Recorded i think around 70-71 Raw Material were a five piece with lots of flute and saxophone and a nice line in complex time signarure. The opener 'time and illusion' is the lengthy standout, nice vibes and a wonderful hook line. Pity about the lyrics about pixies and gnomes 'pear on an apple tree'pounds along and 'traveller man' has the obligatory guitar freak out. Probably my favourite track and the one for mellotron buffs is 'destruction of America' where the spoken dialogue fits just right. So what of Raw Material? like many others destined to legend. The second album is good as well.

Ignore the review above!!!!!!!!!!! 24 Mar 2003

No, he is correct that the first album is not as cliched a progressive rock album as the second (don't get me wrong, I love the second album), but it still has some very fine qualities......it is harder rocking than the second, very bass heavy with little saxaphone but much stronger guitar work....just listen to the extended workout at the end of Traveller Man. Melodically it is still good and really takes you back to the London underground scene as the 60's turned into the 70's. Both Raw Material albums are great, just very different from one another....if you buy one after the other expecting more of the same then you will probably be disappointed....just go in with an open mind and enjoy!

good 2 Jan 2010

HA! One guy loves this album and the other guy hates it. I was giving this three stars before I even look at the two other reviews, but now this even makes more sense.

This is not bad by any standard. Raw Material uses some progressive elements here--flute, sax, jazzy vibraphone--and works nice solos. Some of this music is based on hard rock/blues structures, not quite prog, but the soloing and the ambition make this proto-prog if not the genuine article.

The problem I find is that there are a lot of different song ideas here; they are all good but very disperate, and the album does not seem to head in any one direction. There is no center of gravity.

Still, worth a listen

The first effort is bad! 3 Dec 2001

I have both albums of Raw Material. The second album has strong progressive structure with strange and beatiful melodies. But the first is the bad parody on progressive music. Very bad ...
