Book Description

23 April 2012 0500289913 978-0500289914
Tristan Manco, perhaps the worlds most influential commentator on street art, showcases the work of 38 truly innovative and inspirational artists who use low-cost, low-tech media and often totally original techniques to produce work that defies categorization and pushes the boundaries of art itself. Many of them repurpose utilitarian or scrap materials, from unglamorous items of domestic waste, found wood and even organic detritus such as skin and nails to recycled toys, books, skateboards, firecrackers and lights. Others show creative approaches to traditional or proven media such as paper, stone, concrete and steel. The ingeniously crafted and thought-provoking results range across a broad spectrum, from intimate paper collages to large public sculptures constructed from discarded wood. Anyone fascinated by the extraordinary creativity currently emerging at the raw edge of contemporary art will find this book compelling reading.

Review

Manco plays an effective role as curator and author ... a comprehensive and understandable introduction. --SID Magazine

An epic salute to sustainable art creation. --flourodigital.com

Bright and weighty. --Time Out London

Intelligent ... dives head first into the discovery of artists working methods ... This book is essential. Not only is it informative, but it's inspirational. --Aesthetica

The title of Tristan Manco's book says it all, but it doesn t quite prepare the reader for the sheer amount of visual interest collected in this fascinating book ... the work by the 38 artists featured here demands attention and warrants a closer look. --Creative Review

Unusual, fascinating and superb … brilliantly shot and splendidly produced colour photographs … an inspired and inspiring collection for the general reader interested in contemporary art, as well as artists and scholars specializing in 21st-century art. --Publishers Weekly

Manco writes well and cogently ... his choice of artists is satisfyingly varied --Elephant Magazine

4.0 out of 5 stars Recylced Art 7 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback
This book is a survey of work by artists and craftsmen made using scrap and other everyday materials, such as flip-flops, broken bottles and skateboards to create playful and imaginative works of art.
The ingeniously crafted and thought-provoking results showcased in this book range from delicate cut paper collages to large public sculptures constructed from discarded wood.
Despite the diversity of the artists' methods and ideologies, their work shares an underlying current: it uses resources that would otherwise be wasted, reflecting contemporary concerns about the environment.

I first saw Raw+Material=Art in the bookshop at Manchester City Art Gallery.

I loved the clear, lively illustrations, and well informed comment.

I purchased it from Amazon at a good price, and have since bought it for relatives in Finland and Australia.

I would recommend it to every art student and to those who think they have no interest in art!
