Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Defiant, sexy, playful, nervy, womanly, and wise, 1988's Raw Like Sushi was the opening salvo in Neneh Cherry's brilliant, if woefully underappreciated, career. The hit "Buffalo Stance," with its reworking of Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals vibe, found Cherry erroneously labeled as a rap artist. True enough, there are hip-hop elements on Raw Like Sushi, as well as pop, electronic, R&B, and dance, all gleefully mixed up in a progressive melange of beats, cultures, emotions, and grooves. Besides being fierce, funky, and one of the best debuts in memory, Raw Like Sushi helped redefine what women could do in the rigid realm of late-'80s African American music, and it sounds as good today as it did the day it was released. --Amy Linden

BBC Review

These days Neneh Cherry seems as happy to be known for her cooking as for her music. But back in 1989 she took the world by storm when she served up Raw Like Sushi, an intercontinental melting pot of rap, soul and pop influences that yielded hit singles Buffalo Stance, Manchild and Kisses On The Wind.

Born in Sweden to a highly bohemian family (musician father and stepfather, artist mother) and gaining an impressive pre-fame musical pedigree (rubbing shoulders with such reggae royalty as Bim Sherman in Adrian Sherwood's New Age Steppers) Neneh's feisty femininity breathed life into late 80s chart scene. Though other successes would follow - most notably international smash 7 Seconds with Youssou N'dour - she would never recreate the impact of her debut.

Much of that impact can be attributed to starting the album with the biggest tunes. Buffalo Stance, with its undulating synths, ''You go girl!'' sentiments and killer hooks is every bit the floor-filler it was ten years ago. The offbeat, ambient ballad Manchild (co-written with Massive Attack's 3D) showcases Cherry's maternal side, while the Cuban-tinged Kisses On The Wind's autobiographical words give an intriguing insight into a young girl who wanted to be remembered for more than just her incredible looks.

The quality does dip a little once we get past the hits, with lots of sub-Prince keyboard funk and mocked up party FX. The straight rap tunes have dated the most, but Neneh's lyrics are a hoot - slamming together pop culture and pop psychology with endearing results. Compared to the raunch of today's charts, her attitudes are unusually tame (''My body is clean but my mind is bad'', ''he wasn't impressed cause I wouldn't get undressed'') valuing love, monogamy and genuineness above all else. Other plusses include a nice nod to her reggae past on duet My Bitch - when Gilly G breaks into the first verse of Leroy Smart's Happiness Is My Desire - and some stripped down remixes of the singles which give the album a closing lift. Frontloaded it may be, yet most of Raw Like Sushi still sounds fresh. --Angus Taylor

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Debut 2 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD
When Neneh Cherry burst onto the scene in 1989 with this superb debut, she really did open the gates for the many hip-hop artists who found a wider audience in her wake. What set Cherry apart at the time, however, and still sets her apart in retrospect today, is the quality of the writing, which is front and centre above the spot-on musical production that lies underneath.

Whether it's the irresistible strut of 'Buffalo Stance', the bittersweet lullaby of 'Manchild', the power pop of 'Kisses on the Wind' or the addictive anger of 'Inner City Mamma' (all huge hits), Cherry's often painful, sometimes tongue in cheek, but ultimately triumphant autobiographical themes give the whole affair a real shot of authenticity and insight, a depth which is rare in this genre of music, or any other for that matter. She can move from pathos to comedy in one line, and then straight back again, playful, beguiling, confessional, uplifting, revealing - it's all here, and abundant in every glorious track.

None of the few yet superlative projects that followed quite caught the refreshingly brash, youthful and exuberant energy of Cherry like this one did, and this makes 'Raw Like Sushi' an album to be truly cherished by the artist herself and music-lovers everywhere.

A must!

4.0 out of 5 stars REFRESHING WITTY RAPPING 19 Aug 2003
By Pieter Uys HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Neneh Cherie's contribution in the early nineties infused hip hop with some fresh humor and intelligence, sometimes with a feminist slant. The track My Bitch is a sassy duet with a male vocal and has a lovely twist in the tale. Phoney Ladies is a bouncy pop number whilst the soulful Manchild consists of alternating singing and rapping parts. The real gem of the album is Buffalo Stance, the most original rap of the early nineties. Its infectious beat, streetwise lyrics and innovative instrumentation form an intoxicating brew for the ears and feet. Heart is likewise a bouncy and tuneful number with pop appeal whilst Kisses On The Wind has a Latin flavour and Spanish vocals in its appealing mix. With its jerky rhythm and party atmosphere, Outré Risqé Locomotive is the perfect club track. In her cheeky, compassionate and clever music, Neneh Cherry brought a new poetic lyricism to rap; this album remains a minor classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of those classics from back in the day 16 Nov 1999

Surely everyone should have this in their collection and if you don't or gave it to the charity shop ages ago, then buy it now. This has album got to go along with the like of De La Souls and Soul to Soul, perhaps that was just down to a great era for music. Favourites on here have to be 'Buffalo Stance', 'Manchild' and 'Inna City Mama'. Neneh is a God!

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of personality and late 80s break beats! 11 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Funky and fun. It's just personality, personality, personality. It's a really well paced album. Even the remixes are worth a listen. It's quite teenage in places, but great for a hit of the late 80s.
