Like your other reviewers I've treasured a vinyl copy of this great record for years and am delighted it's now available on CD. Many years ago I saw her supporting the Mahavishnu Orchestra of all people and was totally struck by her amazing voice. She can move from the emotional folk of her hit single "Give her the Day" right through to the near Janis Joplin style anguish of "Which Way Do I Go". In truth there are a couple of rather ordinary tracks on the album which is why I've given it four stars rather than the maximum, but don't be put off, the best here is really good.

I often wondered what happened to Ms Whitren? Apart from the brief appearance with the Alan Parsons project, she and partner John Cartwright have made several records including "International Times" and "Rhythm Hymn" which are almost impossible to find but worth the effort. However, if you want to hear something truly extraordinary try "Court of Miracles", the band she has formed with her family, available on CD. I got mine from Amazon. She's now an vastly accomplished singer in a kind of alternative soul/jazz/rap style, plays beautiful jazz trumpet and lives in France. The woman truly is a treasure.

In hope, I combed Amazon and other sites regularly for news of this long out of print album ever since I went on line years ago. If I can muster few constructive words to recommend here, today - (my 'disc'overy), it's only because I am so very, very excited and relieved to find Raw But Tender has last become available again. But let me posit something more meaningful than mere wordy diatribe, to which you may identify: I bought this treasured release on vinyl many moons ago and clearly remember from what shop, the time and the climate of that day.

Good on you Ms. Whitren. You absolutely deserve it.

I've been after this on CD for many years and it's finally available! Joy. I heard Jackie on a BBC Radio 1 'In Concert' (hosted by Bob Harris) back in the mid-1970s and then saw her in concert and I was captivated by her deep, warm tones and really great songs. This is a great buy.

I have been waiting to buy this on CD for years. I bought the orginal vinyl LP when it was released along with the 7" single "Give Her The Day". I remember seeing Jaki perform this song live on South Yorkshire's Calendar programme on after the 6 o'clock news - absolutely breathtaking. Jaki has had many other records released since this and they are all fanatastic Check her out singing on the chorus of Alan Parsons Project's "Some Other Time". Having had all Judee Sill's recordings released on CD ths is heaven! All I need now is David Elliot's Atlantic LPs on CD. Enjoy!

Recorded in 1973 when she was still a teen, it is remarkable what a strong and expressive vocal Jaki Whiten possessed. The material on the album is very roots based, spanning Blues, Folk, Country as well as soft acoustic folk-rock.

Although Whitren was British born and bred, her vocal mannerisims sound much more like her American counterparts such as Joni Mitchell. It's a lovely style that is bluesey but not overpowering to let the wonderful songs shine through.

The songs are all self penned by Whitren and flow from one to another with great conviction. They are reflective and heartfelt but warm and welcoming. They are certainly never melancholic or self-pitying and the set is pleasant and uplifting because of this.

The album has lots of colour in the instrumentation, from the baroque woodwind arrangement of 'Oh Little Boy' to the jazz infected brass of 'But Which Way Do I Go?' as well as nice folk flourishes on Banjo and Dobro on 'New Horizon'. There is also a wonderful understated string arrangement on 'Give Her The Day'. The band that backs her up includes a rhythmn section of Fairport Convention members Pat Donaldson and Gerry Conway plus arrangements and various instrumental support by Rob Young, Ivan Chandler and Stuart Cowell. The musicians provide quite a groovy backing in part due to the voodoo congas that is heard on several tracks.

Although the musical backing is very good it really is Whitrens' show. In short this album is a something of a masterpiece from the era and is well worth a spin as an alternative to 'Tapestry', 'Blue' and 'Just Another Diamond Day'.
