Product Description

Review

We're great fans of the English watercolourist Eric Ravilious here at Stella. So we were thrilled to see the beautiful new book `Ravilious in Pictures'. --Stella, Sunday Telegraph, December 2009

Ravilious's watercolour landscapes of the South Downs were painted mainly in the second half of the 1930s, and are beautifully reproduced here alongside insightful essays from the social historian James Russell. --London Review of Books, January 2010

Each [watercolour] is accompanied by a short essay in which James Russell cleverly mixes history and biographical detail. Thus in the text on `The Wilmington Giant' (1939), we learn about the possible meanings of the great carved figure, the increasing public interest in archaeology inspired by discoveries such as Tutankhamun's tomb and the Sutton Hoo burial site, the invention of barbed wire, and a chance meeting Ravilious had with the owner of the Giant on a train in 1941... The next volume from Mainstone Press is eagerly awaited. --Sarah Drury, The Art Book, August 2010

Containing 22 full-page colour plates, the book dwells on Sussex and the South Downs, which remained an inspiration for the artist. James Russell's writing has the clarity and concision of the paintings, and is both properly informative and enjoyably readable... Glorious.
--Andrew Lambirth, The Art Newspaper, September 2010

When it comes to "bangs for your bucks", you don't get many with this book. In all, 23 paintings are reproduced, full page, most of them displayed facing a page of editorial, some of it explicit to the plate and some of it background stuff about Ravilious' career. The plates are of high quality, and the fact that these images have been selected to fit the remit "Sussex and the Downs" means they form a coherent whole which is satisfying and stimulating.

Ravilious died as a War Artist during the Second World War and his work is still under copyright; his family have been closely involved in the recent resurgence of interest in this individual, intensely English artist. This book reads as one written with a close personal knowledge and one feels again the poignancy of his early death.

As there is little published on Ravilious, and all of it pricey, the relatively high cost of this slim book must be borne philosophically. It has been produced with care and is essential for anyone interested in 20th century British painters.

a lovely publication and if you are a fan of the work of Eric Ravilious you will not be disappointed as there are over 20 plates all with good text describing the work. The earliest in this book was painted 1927 but the bulk were done in 1939. There is an excellect introduction to the works of Ravilious in this book and the author certainly knows what he is talking about.
