Clocking in at over three hours in its entirety, The Master is one to take a disc at a time.
Disc one (ragas) is truly magical, proof that Shankar is an incredible player.
Disc two, Homage to Mahatma Ghandi is intense and reverential, track one building up over 24 minutes into something truly special.
Disc 3 is a series of collaborations with Japanese musicians. Some work better than others, but the standout for me is Tribute To Japan, which is (like a few others in this set) a thing of wonder. Also Padhasapa which has a kind of a Moondog quality. Brilliant.
So much for musicians being past it at 27. Shankar was in his 60s and 70s when some of these tracks were made.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Deutsche Grammophon for this intelligently compiled and reasonably priced set.
