There are few if any people left alive who really knew the old army of the British Raj in India, but John Masters was such a one. He wrote about it in its twilight years in his autobiography and this novel, a real page turner, tells of a little known aspect of the Indian Army during the Great War: well recommended as a good read that ought to be made available on Kindle.

My vote for John Masters best 6 Aug 2012

Very few people are still alive who held a King's Commision In the Indian Army, let alone from the time of WW I. But John Masters started WW II as a a searving Officer in the 4/5 Gurkha Rufles and at the end of the War was the commander of the 1/3rd Gurkha Rifles. He was the fifth generation of his family to sereve in India. There was no state of Ravi, therefore no Ravi Lancers. But there was one Indian unit that served in France in WW I. For Indian/Hindu reasons it withdrew to India for ethical reasons similar to the ones that caused the fictional Ravi Lancers to do so. The East vs. West conflics are clearly brought to light, without saying which is better. NO one was better qualified to write aboiut them than John Masters. You too will read more of his books, be warned.

The Ravi Lancers 10 Feb 2014
By Barry Wiley - Published on Amazon.com

Anything written by John Masters is worth reading. Masters served in the British military (with the Gurkhas) during the Raj and after Indian Independence, Masters writes completely engaging novels that have the true tone of someone who knew Indian history intimately. Two of his novels, "The Deceivers" and "Bhowani Junction" were made into popular movies. The Ravi Lancers is the story of an Indian regiment in WWI and their everyday encounter with customs, laws and enemies that were entirely new to them. At times a bit more detailed than necessary to keep the story moving, but on the whole a rewarding read.
