Product Description

If you’re really up for a challenge and have got plenty of room, then this could be the puzzle for you! Setting the Guinness World Record for the biggest puzzle on the planet that you can buy,the 32,000 pieces build into a retrospective of artwork by American artist Keith Haring (1958–1990). Each of the 32 different images shows one of Haring’s quirky illustrations, inspired by the cartooning skills he learnt from his father. Haring was very keen for art to be available to everyone, and many of his works were created for charities, hospitals, children’s day care centres and orphanages. The limited but vibrant colour palette used in these illustrations will make this puzzle an incredible challenge. The 32,256 pieces (supplied in 8 separate bags) build into a truly massive puzzle measuring 544 x 192cm. The puzzle comes packed in a large sturdy box and is supplied with its own trolley,so you can transport the box around more easily. This puzzle is ideal for those who want a large challenge and could be used by a group of people who want a huge piece of stunning artwork to display - perhaps in a school, hospital, community hall etc… Ravensburger adult puzzles are made using “Softclick Premium Puzzle” technology. This uses thicker and stronger board (manufactured especially for Ravensburger),and hand-crafted cutting tools resulting in strong, smooth and dust-free pieces with a superb fit. Founded in 1883,Ravensburger remains a family owned business specializing in the development and manufacture of jigsaw puzzles and games. All of our cardboard jigsaw puzzles are made in our own European factories and use the finest quality print and materials. Much of our range is developed especially for the British market by our Oxfordshire-based development team, who actively support the work of British artists, illustrators and graphic designers. Ravensburger Puzzles are easily identified by the “blue triangle” logo

4.0 out of 5 stars Persist and all comes together... 12 July 2011
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Wonderful idea to create such a large puzzle, and interesting background to the artwork as well. Don't underestimate the weight, size and scale of taking this on - it requires a bit more of you than just a standard coffee table puzzle otherwise you'll just lose patience with it. It took us just under 12 weeks to complete this one although if you were on it a bit more it could be done much quicker.

We found some of the pieces slightly damaged/lightly folded and it is all too easy to take a piece out of the puzzle (a wrong attempt) and start peeling apart another piece in the process. Generally the piece composition material is quite dry (there's considerable dust in the packaging so watch out for rubbing your eyes) and powdery so take care with the pieces. The correct pieces do click together nicely though and the top finish is good.

The puzzle is supplied in eight bags of pieces, each bag being very modestly labelled to assign it a position on the puzzle so you can complete this in sections. Each section has the same template as the others, with the exception of the edges which obviously sometimes differ. Coloured pieces are not too bad, the white pieces can prove a little more tricky as some are reasonably similar and need checking until you get the good fit - there are no small gaps or ugly pushed together pieces when they are in properly.

Positives:

+ wonderful concept, interesting artwork
+ tricky to bring such a large puzzle to market so well done to Ravensburger for taking the plunge

Negatives:

- take care with fragility of pieces, all too easy to remove the laminate layer
- watch out for dust

Would we buy another Ravensburger? Oh, yes, very much so.

Before you even think about starting to put this together, make sure your calender is empty for the next few weeks, as you will find it hard to stop! This puzzle is good quality. Out of the 32 000 pieces only 1 was damaged a little (nothing a bit of glue couldn't fix), the other 31 999 where in perfect condition.

This Puzzle is packed in 8 bags of 4000 pieces each. When I got to the 4th bag I noticed some of the colors in this bag (green and blue) didn't have the same shade on all the pieces. Once put together It showed that there was a shade gradient from left to right, going from blue and green to a more purple blue and a more yellowish green. Depending on the lighting it would be more or less noticable, and it wasn't someting I couldn't have lived with. However, I contacted Ravensburger anyway, explaining my observations, and two days later ups dropped of a brand new bag with 4000 pieces to replace this part of the puzzle! Great service from Ravensburger!

Packaging of this rather heavy puzzle is very good! The white ravensburger puzzle box was packed together with a trolley in a very sturdy cardboard outer box and made its way to Belgium in perfect condition.

Just a hint, be carefull if a piece doen't fit very well. The puzzle contains a repetitive pattern of 1000 pieces, which means every piece will appear 4 times in each bag. Thanks to the pattern being flipped upside down on the lower half of each part and a slight shift in placement of the illustrations, this will mostly not cause any problems. However, most white pieces will appear twice in each bag, almost identical, if not identical. Even some coloured piece will be identical. If a piece doesn't seem to fit perfectly, don't push it in but but start looking for its identical twin (which if already placed will be found at the exact same position of the side-neighbouring illustration, or in the lower/upper neighbouring illustrations at +/- the same location if you flip it 180° and shift it up/down a couple of lines. Luckely there are 2 very strange pieces in every illustration, which makes it easier to orientate yourself and locate the twin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great but... 31 Aug 2012

This puzzle came out right before I finished the puzzle, "Life: The Great Challenge" which at the time was the world's largest jiggsaw puzzle. While I'm excited about having another large puzzle to complete, I wasn't thrilled at having the bragging rights pulled out from under me on the previous puzzle!

So far I've found this puzzle to be much more difficult than the, "Life" puzzle. The colors are solid with very few patterns to go by. This can be frustrating but for me, worth it. I think anyone willing to tackle a 32,000 piece puzzle won't let the additional challenge deter them.

The most frustrating thing for me is that the pieces don't fit together very well. Combine this with the fact that most pieces are solid colored, and you're bound to get annoyed. Even after finishing the first bag and having all pieces "fit" together, I'm not confident that all the pieces are in the right spots and you can easily exchange them with other pieces and not know which is the better fit. That really bothers me. At first I spent a lot of time trying to line up edges but after a while I realized that even if the piece was in the right spot, the edges don't typically line up.

Regardless, given the chance I would purchase this puzzle again.

I'd like to address some comments that have been made about the puzzle pieces not fitting right. So far, I have found that the pieces fit just fine, if you have the patience to make sure that you genuinely have the right piece in the right place.

I bought this puzzle a few days ago, along with a bunch of foam core board. When it is complete, I will be storing it in pieces until I have the space to assemble and hang it. As with all Ravensburger puzzles, I have not been disappointed with the quality. The pieces are solid and well-cut. There is almost never a doubt in my mind as to whether a fit is correct, but I am very meticulous. Of course, given the size and color challenge of this puzzle, I would imagine that if you are not meticulous, you'd be crazy to attempt this endeavor.

All said and done, I'm looking forward to the next few months. I have almost completed one fourth of a bag (of which there are eight in the box).

If you love puzzles, want a challenge, and would enjoy having some bright artwork as a prominent art feature in your home, definitely buy this puzzle.

As a side note, Amazon.com's customer service is absolutely phenomenal. I very rarely have anything to call them about, but this was one of the rare occasions I had to contact them. I noticed the price dropped significantly on this item the day after I placed my order. They gave me a price adjustment with no hassle whatsoever. This is the reason I have continued to shop with them for... geez, 15 years now!
