Product Description

Product Description

When grifters Shaw and Romeo pull up at a convenience store in Georgia, their only thought is to fix a faulty tyre and be on their way to Florida. But this happens to be the store from which a $318 million Jackpot ticket has just been sold - and when the pretty clerk accidentally reveals to Shaw the identity of the winning family, he hatches a terrifyingly audacious plan. That night, he visits the Boatwright family's home and takes them hostage, while the sinister Romeo patrols the streets nearby, prepared to murder the Boatwrights' loved ones at the first sign of resistance. At first, the family offers none. But Shaw's plan depends on maintaining constant fear - merciless, unfaltering terror - and soon, under the pressure, everyone's sanity begins to unravel...

1.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Plot Terribly Executed!, 3 Sep 2009
By bobbewig (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ravens (Hardcover)
Having read and enjoyed both of George Dawes Green's previous books, The Caveman's Valentine and The Juror, I was looking forward to reading Ravens. I was under the impression that the old adage, "...good things come to those who wait" was about to come true, since Ravens is Green's first book in fourteen years. I couldn't have been more wrong. In fairness to Green, his plot concept is a pretty intriguing one; i.e., a family living in a small town in Georgia struggling to make ends meet find out they just won 318 million dollars in the state lottery. However, instead of this being the best day of their lives it turns into a nightmare for the family when two men hatch a wild scheme to get the family to agree to give them half of their winnings. While the plot premise enticed me into buying the books, Green's execution of the plot caused me to skip large passages of the book, and then to finally read just the last few pages to find out how it ends. It's rare that I don't read a book from cover to cover but Ravens caused me to make an exception to my rule. The reasons for this are that the characters were unbelievable, thinly developed and shallow, the intended thrills were unthrilling, the subplots were too sketchy and somewhat disjointed and the dialogue rarely seemed credible. Needless to say, I was highly disappointed in Ravens, and I would strongly recommend that you pass on reading it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Style Over Substance, 30 Oct 2009
By Colin In Blue (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ravens (Hardcover)
This book was an impulse buy when I was looking for another book. I was attracted by the plot, which sounded interesting, and by the the author. The premise is indeed an interesting one, with a couple of chancers who stumble into a town where a family has just won over 300 million dollars on the lottery.

But that's where the plot seems to start coming apart. One of the chancers comes up with a plan, seemingly inside half an hour, of how to steal the cash from the family by effectively holding them hostage and threatening to send the other one round to kill their friends and family should they offer any resistance.

They are a pretty pathetic pair, and I would have been more scared by Noddy than them. There are so many chances for one member of the family or another to raise the alarm or to take action themselves, I found myself almost telling the characters just how to deal with this ludicrous pair. The sub-plots are really just there to pad it out, I think, and add nothing to the plot and little to character development.

On the plus side, the story rattles along at a good old pace, and I do like the style of writing he employs. On the whole, if you want something to pass the time, this isn't a bad buy, but if you want a real thriller, I wouldn't say this is the best you could do.
