Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The disc of 2002 so far (writing in March) has to be this superlatively played, presented and recorded issue of the Ravel Piano Trio, two Violin Sonatas and Sonata for Violin and Cello featuring a young French violinist whose name was until recently known to few, and for good reason. He had never played in Britain, had no recording profile, and his career was firmly rooted in France. But Renaud Capuçon was so complete and perfect a musician--sensitive, refined, technically brilliant, full with character--that it was only a matter of time before his reputation spread to Britain. And this ravishingly beautiful CD, which also introduces two other young musicians of outstanding calibre, can only speed the process. Tempi in the Trio are a touch slow, and you might perhaps ask for more driven motivation in the opening movement Modère. But this is the kind of playing where every move has been thought through with a profound depth of understanding, and the result speaks with a wisdom beyond the performers' years: a mastery that beggars criticism. If it doesn't sweep the international CD awards next time around, sue me. --Michael White

Wonderful!! 7 April 2006
Format:Audio CD
I listened to several good recordings of the Ravel piano trio before settling on this one. I have to confess that I had not heard of any of the performers on this disc before and having listened to these performances I was surprised to find out just how young they were, but don't let that put you off, this is playing of the highest calibre. Throughout the performances there is a sense of warmth and expansiveness that feels entirely right for this music. All in all I would whole-heartedly recommend this recording, it is a rare find!

Beautiful performances of these works! 28 July 2010
By Steven A. Reading - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Of all the recordings (and there are now many) of the Capucon brothers, this remains my favorite.
The wonderful intensity, beauty of sound, sometimes edgy interaction between the players (particularly in the Violin and Cello Sonata) and natural musicality of these performances makes
for a wonderful 70+ minutes of listening.

Braley's contribution in the very difficult piano parts is every bit their match, as is the
wide-ranging Virgin recorded sound.

There are many outstanding versions of these works available. For combination of repertoire,
performance and recorded sound, this cd stands very high on the recommended list!

If you do not know Ravel's chamber music, this cd and a recording of the String Quartet are
the way to begin exploring. Enjoy!

Ravel As It Should Be Played 27 April 2011
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Maurice Ravel remains a composer whose works are part of the programming of every orchestra in the world and his chamber works are also popular among soloists and ensembles. The Piano Trio is surely one of his very finest compositions and on this recording something magical happens: the trio becomes ethereal and enters a realm of pure beauty that rarely occurs in the manner that it does here. The reason lies in the strengths of the three performers - Renaud Capuçon, violin, Gautier Capuçon, cello, and Frank Braley, piano. And the Trio is only openers - the remaining works on the inordinately beautiful CD are equally as impressive.

Renaud Capuçon and Frank Braley offer the Sonata for Violin and Piano with all the tongue in cheek humor and jazz influence that Ravel embraced. Then the brothers Renaud Capuçon and Gautier Capuçon are alone for the Sonata for Violin and Cello and a better interplay of the instruments of the work could not be imagined. The recital closes with the gorgeous 'Sonata Posthume for Violin and Piano' written in 1897 but not published until 1975, is lush and impressionistic and gives the violin a soaring, high-flying line. The piece is an appropriate conclusion for a wonderful recording. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 11

Exquisite 13 Mar 2010

A very beautiful recording. Magical moments of lyrical sensitivity are handsomely complimented by passages of thrilling virtuosity and robust outbursts of passionately emotive playing. Ravel's genius is marvelously and adequately represented by this superb trio.
