A wonderfully played disc of Ravel's piano music, for 4 hands one one piano, and for piano duet(2 pianos);and in one case "Frontispice"(no it's not spelt wrong!)FIVE hands on 2 pianos, try and work that out.
The first disc by Thorson & Thurber consists of Ravel played on 2 pianos, the 2nd disc is for 4 hands on one piano, with the exception of the 5 handed piece above.
As Ravel was principally a pianist over and above his composing skills, many of his works were written for piano first before being orchestrated.
This disc enables you to hear his orchestrated works in a stripped down manner, and see the bones that underly Ravels mastery of colour.
On Disc 1 we have:~
Introduction & Allegro
Ma Mere L'Oye
Ouverture de Sheherazade
As I say I know many of these, but the ones I don't are to me completely new, and fascinating
Thorson and Thurber are likewise unknown to me,but play most beautifully and know just where to draw the line without becoming cliched.
If you like Ravel, like piano, and want a different way of listening to his music you cannot fail to be enchanted by this disc.
Only one drawback(if it is one) the two discs together only total just under 89 minutes, why they couldn't have dropped something and fitted on one disc I don't kno(or added something to each disc)It's a Brilliant Classics issue, and they are usually so good at filling discs out.
Ah well, if you can get it for around £5.00 it's still well worth having.
