Review

"The best Joanna Brady mystery to date. . . .This is J.A. Jance at the top of her form." -- "Arizona Daily Sun""Solid. . .Well-integrated subplots help drive the action and deepen the characterization . . .Brady is an appealing mix of sometimesconflicting characteristics. . .a tough cop who brooks nonsense from no one--and that includes the crusty individuals who live in hercounty, the bad guys who show up there, or anyone who might harbor the slightest doubt that a woman could do a sheriff'sjob."-- "Seattle Times"

Product Description

Sheriff Joanna Brady is the law in Cochise County, and she will never allow her personal trials to interfere with the job she was elected to do—especially now that death has invaded Bisbee, Arizona, and has shattered the small desert town's fragile peace.

A gun dealer has died violently, and his stock of high-powered weapons has been cleaned out. Suspicion falls upon rancher Alton Hosfield, an armed separatist at war with the federal government and the local law—with everyone, in fact, whom he perceives as a threat to his independent way of life.

Joanna Brady suspects the solution is not so cut-and-dried—especially when the cold-blooded slaying is followed by a series of others, equally horrific and perplexing. At best, an incendiary "Ruby Ridge" situation is brewing. At worst, a maniacal serial killer has come to feed on her unsuspecting community. But Joanna's preoccupation with bringing a murderer to justice could take a terrible toll on her private life . . . and unravel threads of family, love, and responsibility that might never again be retied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner 10 July 1998

J A Jance has done it again. Rattlesnake Crossing is an excellent addition to the previous Joanna Brady mysteries. Set in a large county in Arizona shots rings out in the night and JoAnna is off again trying to save the citizens of Cochise County from murder. Fans of the Joanna Brady should also check out JA Jance's other series JP Beaumont of Seattle. I recommend both series to mystery fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Joanna Brady , wonderful and real 31 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
My first J.A.Jance . Encouraged mostly by the ratings given by Amazon customers I bought this book and was totally satisfied. Ms Jance brings Joanna Brady and all of the characters to life and makes the reader feel that they are aware of small community life in Arizona. The only small critisism and it is very small was the lack of suspense at the end of this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mystery, great setting, great characters! 24 Jan 1999

Format:Hardcover
I stumbled across the Joanna Brady series with Desert Heat, and enjoyed the southern Arizona setting and the very real characters. I've since enjoyed following Joanna, her family and friends through the series of novels. Rattlesnake Crossing has really developed the relationship between Joanna and Butch - I can hardly wait till August for the next novel to be released to find out how Butch's moving to Bisbee will affect them!

A good deal of the action in Rattlesnake Crossing takes place on the Pomerene Road north of Benson, and towards Redington...I was excited to read about the San Pedro Valley, the flora and fauna, and the surrounding nearly-ghost-towns, since we are planning a vacation to the area. In fact, I can hardly wait to visit Bisbee to see the real Copper Queen Hotel, and to check to see if the building housing Joanna's office really exists!

5.0 out of 5 stars Joanna Brady at her best 8 Jan 1999

Format:Hardcover
J.A. Jance has done it again. I would hazard a guess that is the best J. Brady book yet. This book hit on some violent subject matter but it was handled in superb form and with a couple twists and turns to make it a book you just can't put down. Packed with action and intrique J. A. Jance has made Sheriff Joanna Brady a character that all people can identify with and come to love. I can't wait to read about Joanna Brady's next adventure in the little town of Bisbee, Az.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 28 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I couldn't put this book down long before picking it back up. The plot turned on you and the ending came as quite a surprise. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the Joanna Brady mysteries, stumbling unto them during a brief time of unemployment and excessive reading. Her other series, with J.P. Beaumont, is just as good. Actually, I like "Beau" better but Joanna is really great herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! She's done it again! 27 Aug 1998
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
When I started reading the J Brady series I waited for paperback. Not anymore. The timeworn phrase works here: I could not put the book down. I tried to make it last but alas, had to finish on the spot. Ending just a tad weak but all is forgiven if Ms Jance can just keep on with her concise and not too wordy details and very interesting characters.

I enjoy reading the Joanna Brady mysteries but cannot recommend this one to my squeamish friends. I was surprised Jance chose such violent subject matter. Is this necessary???

This is possibly her best book yet. I read it in 24 hrs. because I could hardly set it aside. She continues to develop her main characters well. There are a couple shocking turns in this book!
