Product Description

Product Description

Published in association with the Imperial War Museum, this wonderful series uses primary source evidence such as diaries, posters, newspapers cuttings and oral accounts to portray life on the Home Front in a dramatically vivid manner, as well as comparing it with the experiences of civilians elsewhere. Soap, sugar, sweets, clothes and petrol were just a few of the items that were rationed during World War Two. How did everyone cope on a diet that included powdered eggs and Spam? "Rationing" will tell you the answer to these and many other questions.

About the Author

This whole series is absolutely superb when it comes to bringing the WWII and what it meant for the families at home alive to children. My ten-year old daughter is devouring these books (we by now have the whole series) as she can connect with 'the home front' as it is - the home. What she finds most interesting are the quotes as she says 'they are from the people back then how they felt about it' and I think that is a good way of describing it. Thanks to the many photos and the many quotes, the book does bring the home front alive and the reader can start to connect with that part of history. For example, the fact that rationing was kept for so many years after the war that her dad had time (so to speak!!) to be born was absolutely mindboggling to our daughter BUT it gave her a whole new perspective on what the WWII meant at home. If you are looking for a serious piece of history on WWII then this is not the book to buy. If you are looking for something to share with your child(ren) to start a journey of discovery, a discussion, a further learning, then look no further!
