Biography

Before they started The Verve, Richard Ashcroft, Simon Jones, Nick McCabe and Peter Salisbury used to gather in an old car, high above the hillsides around Wigan, gazing down over the town and wondering how they could avoid the anonymity that destiny seemed to be presenting them with. Their solution was to form a band, but even the wild-eyed dreamers couldn’t possibly have guessed just how far… Read more in Amazon's The Verve Store

What an earth are they playing at...? They can be genius then have some horrible remix added on the end...although this single is 10 times better than the first, I admit tracks 2 and 3 which are not on the album are the best, yet again...apart from storm in heaven and a few early EPs I have never been that bothered but I always wanted the old sound again...there may be a bit in track 2 to try to get back to old times but maybe its gone forever...that is what fame does to people, it seduces them in...the early pure creativity with nothing to prove is the best...there are hints on here though it might be there still? I know he has a good rich tone voice most folk would die for and I just do not think ashcroft can sing in the old way again though...the beautiful dreamy voice he had...but here's hoping...if not i will just play storm in heaven the same way I play the first stone roses record...maybe thats it for me and the rest of you can have the later stuff...

Forget Rather Be which is a bland Ashcroft number, where the verve come alive is on the bside 'All Night Long' (which is what the stars are for), its looser and has much more real feeling to it; it reminds me slightly of 'Drive You Home' but with a funk edge to it. The Verve really perplex me by releasing such a boring album when they obviously still know how to groove...really really good song.
