Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
Sony’s favourite platforming double act go portable with a game that looks virtually indistinguishable from its big cousin PS2 versions. It plays just the same too and it’s still got the same great sense of humour that fans love.

The lowdown:
Whereas the last few Ratchet & Clank games have become obsessed with online team battles, to the point where the last one barely featured Clank the robot, this portable version is just like the games of old (although it does still have a 4 player mode). Ratchet is still armed with his trusty wrench and a whole host of pleasingly overpowered weapons such as the lacerator gun and the acid bomb glove – you can even switch between them all using the same selection wheel as the originals. The game has plenty of platform elements as well too, with Clank again able to help Ratchet glide to safety whilst in the air.

Most exciting moment:
After being reduced to a cameo in Ratchet: Deadlocked, Clank plays a larger role as a solo character in this new game, with a full wardrobe of robot suits to wear which give him new powers such as a robot flinging magnetic catapult.

Since you ask:
The game isn’t being developed by original developer Insomniac, who are busy on PlayStation 3 first person shooter Resistance: Fall of Man, but by new company High Impact Game.

The bottom line:
It looks like the best ever Ratchet & Clank game might be on the PSP.

4.0 out of 5 stars A successful portable debut, 11 April 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
As a big fan of the Playstation 2 Ratchet and Clank games, I was extremely pleased to find that this Playstation Portable installment manages to keep the same gameplay, hardly cutting graphics and features down at all. The same gigantic weapons and lightweight platforming sections are present as in the Playstation 2 games and the minigames and puzzles keep up the same high level of entertainment.

I suppose I was slightly disappointed that the game did feel so much like a straight copy of the Playstation 2 style of Ratchet and Clank game and not something new and specially designed around the Playstation Portable but at the end of the day it is an all-new Ratchet and Clank game, it is more of the same and it should more than satisfy any fans of the series - it certainly satisfied me, for a first PSP Ratchet and Clank title.

If you've not played a Ratchet and Clank game before then this PSP version is a good place to start on the simple, clean series of shooting and puzzling. It's not the most sophisticated and taxing of titles but it's technically impressive and the pacing is really well considered so beginners won't find it too challenging but anyone up to intermediate level gamers will still be able to work through the title with a well pitched level of difficulty and reward. The only gamers I think would not like this game in any way are those who are so high level that they can only play brutally challenging titles that require extreme concentration and reactions, because for such gamers a laid back title like this is slightly patronising. For everyone else it's good clean fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another sucsessful R&C game on the shelves., 5 Aug 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
R&C Gladiator had got me thinking that insomniac were running out of ideas and inspiration for this , now veteraned series on the Playstation consoles. It lacked heart and soul and most importantly it was boring; a few levels in were enough to see that the game had little promise of the adventures of its predesessors. R&C looked finished. It even ended on a "happily ever after" note making me sure that it was the last game in the series. But here's proof that I was wrong. R&C came waltzing back into the virtual world taking up residence in the latest portable gaming craze: the PSP.
Gameplay : Classic R&C platform gaming. Weapons that you can upgrade and hidden items and armour to find as well as several minigames and challenges to face along the way and hidden challenges required to obtain 'skill points'. Interestig weapons and armour too.

Graphics : R&C easily flounce their classic PS2 Graphics on the PSP system, not too cartoony and not too realistic, just right.

Sound : All the usual nothing special but nothing wrong either (which makes a change)

Enjoyability : Great fun, twists and turns all the way and some funny bits too.

Playability : loads to do in a relatively small game however a little more playable levels would have been better. But i think you will repeat this game at least once.

So there you have it, R&C Size Matters is definately an exellent game, so why the 4 stars you may ask, well its because its a little too short and rushed. The heart of the R&C series was the long winding and interesting levels and unfortunately none of the levels are long and some, a little uninteresting. Apart from this Insomniac can pat themselves on the back for another exellent R&C game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, 29 May 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I love this game!

It's really easy to get into and just play. No need to read through the manual to figure out the control system.

The difficulty is spot on, guiding you to start with, getting progresivly harder. The graphics are fun, as are the sub games.

If you're looking for fun no-brainer go for this.
