Product Description

The Raspberry Pi Camera Board plugs directly into the CSI connector on the Raspberry Pi. It's able to deliver a crystal clear 5MP resolution image, or 1080p HD video recording at 30fps! Custom designed and manufactured by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in the UK, the Raspberry Pi Camera Board features a 5MP (25921944 pixels) Omnivision 5647 sensor in a fixed focus module. The module attaches to Raspberry Pi, by way of a 15 Pin Ribbon Cable, to the dedicated 15-pin MIPI Camera Serial Interface (CSI), which was designed especially for interfacing to cameras. The CSI bus is capable of extremely high data rates, and it exclusively carries pixel data to the BCM2835 processor. The board itself is tiny, at around 25mm x 20mm x 9mm, and weighs just over 3g, making it perfect for mobile or other applications where size and weight are important. The sensor itself has a native resolution of 5 megapixel, and has a fixed focus lens onboard. In terms of still images, the camera is capable of 2592 x 1944 pixel static images, and also supports 1080p @ 30fps, 720p @ 60fps and 640x480p 60/90 video recording. The camera is supported in the latest version of Raspbian, the Raspberry Pi's preferred operating system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well but could do with a longer cable 8 Sep 2013

It took me a few minutes to set up my Raspberry Pi installation to work with the camera and the results were really good. I want to use it as a traditional webcam and upload pictures to my website at regular intervals. This should be easy using a shell script. I will buy another some time to experiment with time lapse photography and some night time wildlife shots.

I have no idea what the other reviewers at talking about when it comes to price ?! I paid 23 delivered (which was next day too). I suspect they are trolling or fake reviews.
Anyway from a technical point of view it a nice neat little module. Using the header next to the Ethernet port it keeps your USB ports free. Watch out for the static sensitivity, but that's not really a big issue.
The image quality is very good for both high def video 1920x1080 and for 5MP stills. The simple package installation gives a nice set of command line tools and the raspberry pi website has great instructions.
Overall, very pleased, top product :)

This is my huband's second Raspberry Pi ( I think he's trying to replicate Jodrell Bank) and he's delighted with it.

Works great, just make sure the cable is pushed home on the front of the module. Takes great images, get the case to protect it and you will be away!
