Rockabilly rocks!! 4 Mar 2010
By neat tunes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This compact disc combines two Ace Records vinyl compilations of choice 1950s material. Rarest Rockabilly & Hillbilly Boogie anthologizes rockabilly history through the prism of the vanity pressing. For a hundred dollars or so, an Elvis wannabe could cut a couple songs and get back a small pressing for their efforts. Once copies were distributed to nearby radio stations, promoters, and juke box operators, the remaining stash was given away to fans and relatives or sold at dances. Texas-based Starday Records was a hotbed for this; in a period of six years, they issued over 500 titles on their Dixie label or vanity labels, and these are this basis for this compilation. As primitive as some of these are, the music is just fine. Most of the artists collected here are just names on labels of a phonograph record company, yet the inclusion of two early rockin' sides from Jimmie Dale Gilmore are most illuminating. This compilation errs on the side of hillbilly boogie but if cowboy boots stand in for blue suede shoes, there's still pep aplenty in selections like Bill Mack's "It's Saturday Night" and Buddy Shaw's "Don't Sweep That Dirt on Me." Best of Ace Rockabilly returns to the classic sound and is loaded with collector's prizes. Sonny Fisher's "Rockin' Daddy" and "Sneaky Pete" are raw Texas style rockabilly at its best, while Louisiana is represented by Link Davis' "Trucker From Tennessee" and Jimmy Johnny's "I Can't Find the Doorknob." The big ticket items are two of George Jones' rare excursions into the deep waters of the big beat, "Rock It" and "How Come It." All in all, a superlative compilation that truly gives a sense of rock & roll's ground-floor incarnation in the wake of Elvis. ~ Cub Koda

neat tunes here- I really like this album. It's jam packed with song after song of early rock'n'roll. The singing and playing is all very high level. It's amazing that one guy after another came in and knocked a single out and they are of such high quality. It blows my mind. Highly recommended! 28 tracks! I've been listening to this compilation on repeat for several days now and still can't get enough, so many catchy, raw songs and heartfelt lyrics. That Cub Koda review says it best. Just get it. You'll love it if you're into '50s rock.
Six-Pack Special! 12 Dec 2011
By Oannes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I can only concur with the previous reviewer, this CD Rocks hard! This is indeed some of the rarest Rockabilly and Hillbilly Boogie you'll ever hear. Every track is great, some funny, most are like a genuine shot of life down your mind. This stuff may be rare, but it sure doesn't deserve to be. My overall feelings about this album, are 1: it's for people who like their music raw and real, music done by fans for fans, and most of this music was recorded in the mid to late 50's by genuine exponents of Rockabilly, and 2: it's for people who like to explore new and wild music, when I bought this CD years ago, I had no idea what it would be like, I was totally floored by how good this CD is.

My favourite tracks are,

1: Trucker From Tennessee (by Link Davis) A rocking number that seems to be an Homage to Elvis?
2: It's Saturday Night (by Bill Mack) Just a good time weekend track, very wild too!
3: My Blackbirds Are Bluebirds Now (By Sleepy Jeffers/The Davis Twins) Very "Country" sounding, lot's of emotion.
4: Rockin' Daddy (by Sonny Fisher/The Rocking Boys) This one has a menacing quality, predating The Cramps by 15 years?

All up, just buy this amazing CD, you will never regret it!
