Product Description

CD Description

The earliest known form of what has become Rock music, Rockabilly was around as early as 1951, and throughout that decade was a hugely popular genre. The style waned somewhat during the 1960s, but by the late 70s a revival of epic proportions was in evidence. The style has remained enormously influential ever since, and artists as diverse as Stray Cats, The Cramps, Chris Isaak, Reverend Horton Heat and Brian Setzer s Big Band have kept the flag flying commercially for what has become a sub-culture all of its own, with a cult-following equal to those of Punk, Ska and Mod. The ongoing popularity of this enduring style of music has bought with it the customary collector s scene, and although there remains a wealth of obscure 45s from the 1950s just waiting to be discovered by both the aging fan inspired by the form s first wave and the alternative young rocker, the vast majority of these records, largely released on tiny American labels, remain enormously hard to locate and, when discoveries are made, hugely expensive to purchase. This collection brings together fifty such Rockabilly gems, many of which have never before been released on CD. All the tracks are as rare as a nun in a bikini, as sought after as Bin Laden, and will prove a pure delight for every collector in existence. Completed with deluxe packaging and extensive sleevenotes, this set is what every Rockabilly fan has been waiting years to own.

"Well 'ard" 15 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
I do not see how anyone who can call himself a music lover, can only give this collection one star. It is a fine collection of r and r/rockabilly (I don't know where the fine line starts and finishes)and by any criteria, it deserves five stars. Ignore the neighbours, turn up the volume and ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A true rarity 16 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
Over the past few years, there has been such a glut of rockabilly compilations released that most of the supposed 'rarities' they contain are now in fact any thing but! This 2 CD album, however bucks the trend with many songs that will interest the true collector, notably, those by Dinky Harris and Walter Brown. There are a few on here that have featured on other collections, but on the whole this is a well put together and researched selection with some great sleevenotes giving info on every artist included.
While this will be of interest to the serious collector, it should also be noted that the broad range of songs on here would serve as a great introduction to the genre, highly recommended for all Rockabilly fans!

Love this compilation, not always the rarest of rockabilly but it's quality stuff anyway, I'll be boppin' till I'm breathless (not a euphemism) when this is delivered. My only criticism is the cover, Teds and rockabilly are not synonymous, they're rock 'n rollers to be sure, but rockabilly is something different. It's like having a Northern Soul CD illustrated with pictures of Goths or a Rap album with a photo of someone with half a brain on the cover. It's incongruous. (well not quite, but you know what I mean, or do you?)
