Right, from the off - let's clarify something. David and Natalie Bauman run one of the most expensive and prestigious rare bookshops in the USA, possibly the world. Branches in several states, including NY and Vegas (apologies, can't remember the others).
They are clearly top of their game and well respected at the art of collecting. However, this book is the sort of material you'd expect to find placed in your bag after sinking $1,000 on a rare book. This is the book world version of the glossy Mercedes flick-book you get from the dealer.
Sure, it's well presented, very clear and not at all stuffy (for a lot of books on book collecting are authored by people who don't strive to make the hobby accessible - they should be congratulated for that in this case) but it does sing rather too strongly like a salesbook. "Beginner" level doesn't even touch the surface.
For example - the common question - "how do you tell if a book is a first edition"?
People could, and probably have, written a thesus on this. D & N cover this one off in 15 lines. This is on page 78 of 106 in total. Not impressed.
I do want to support the Baumans in their passion for books and the hobby, but not in this way. I could never look them in the eye and say it... but buy a better book than this.
