Book Description

Although many devotees were quite satisfied to sit in the Old Hall and bask in the Maharshi’s presence, others felt the need for further study to advance their understanding. To these individuals, Ramana suggested two books.
The first, Lamp of Non Dual Knowledge, reveals how the indirect knowledge gained by hearing Truth puts an end to the idea that ‘It does not exist’ and how the direct knowledge gained by inquiring ‘WHO AM I’ is identical with the knowledge of THAT.
The second, The Mystery Beyond the Trinity, is another ancient text on Advaita that dissects the distinctions between the knower, knowing, and the known to reveal their underlying unity.
These texts are not to be picked up, read through quickly and put away. The verses are full of nectar which will quench the thirst of any earnest seeker who repeatedly reflects on their meaning and in right earnest attempts to implement the teachings. Through fascinating stories and analogies the entire spectrum of spiritual pursuit and attainment is laid out in clear terms.
These two rare gems are a valuable addition to anyone’s Non Duality library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Vedanta but not a light read 21 Jan. 2013

The two books here are both important explanations of the non dual way of understanding. They are traditional and old. The translation makes them easy enough to understand. However there is a lot of intellectual reasoning which makes them slow going. The first (lamp of non-dual knowledge) i found better of the two. It is a dialogue between a master and devotee who questions him on seeking enlightenment and seeing through illusion. I'm glad I read this as it did cross a few T's and dot some I's. the explanations are clear but detailed. The second one is Mystery beyond the Trinity. This had more cultural stuff through it and more story telling. I found myself skipping through it a bit as I preferred the more direct and timeless style of the first one.
Having just read The Ashtavakra Gita in Four Songs of Non Duality by Roy Melvyn, i found the Gita covered so much of what is found in these 2 books in a simpler way. For thoroughness and direct language though I'm glad I added the Lamp of Non-Dual Knowledge. These books aren't for the beginner though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this book by Roy Melvyn !! 20 July 2013

Anytime anyone can put into script Ramana's works in English and convey the heart and depth of the origina I am very thankful and appreciative. If Roy Melvyn had not taken the time to accomplish this booklet and then share it you and I then could not enjoy the fruits of it as our eyes behold each of the words layed out before our presence. I am very grateful.
