Rapunzel visits the trendy '70s in this far-out retelling

Rapunzel, like everyone else in the 1970s, has long hair. But only Rapunzel, from atop a penthouse in which she is imprisoned by her evil Aunt Esme, has hair so long that it sweeps the sidewalk in front of the building. The elevators don't work, so Aunt Esme uses Rapunzel's hair to come and go. And poor Rapunzel spends day after lonely day surrounded by orange-and-brown-patterned walls and shag carpeting, listening to her beloved LPs. Then, at last, a handsome stranger climbs up Rapunzel's hair...why, he's the glam-rock prince of her dreams!

David Roberts's funky 1970s illustrations give this Rapunzel an exciting new twist. Bellbottoms, disco balls, and long sideburns make this the funkiest fairy tale ever!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great children's book (for adults) 25 Feb 2004
Format:Hardcover
I've just read this book in the bookshop, and I want to have it to keep. Not for my daughter necessarily (she's 9 months and quite happy with any book I read right now), but for myself. It's a lovely book, a sweet 70s twist on the original tale, nicely illustrated with a not-too-Grimm ending, but... how many small children really identify with the 70s? The herione listens to David Bowie (alladin Sane from the illustration), and has a poster of John Travolta on the wall, will this strike a chord with a average young kid?

Anyway, do _yourself_ a favour and at least read this book. Me, I'm hoping someone buys it for me... at least until my daughter can read, then I may well just go ahead and buy it anyway. At least then I'll have a good excuse!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great attention to detail 4 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
A great retelling of Rapunzel set in the 1970's. What makes this so appealing though to me as an adult is the attention to detail that the illustrator has gone to to create the 1970's world in which Rapunzel lives. Her bedroom is full of iconic things from the 70's that most people had, lava lamps, cheese plants, and the walls adorned with posters of popular bands and films. I've had as much fun reading this as my neice has I think!
