How sad do you have to be to write a review of a pencil sharpener? About as sad as someone who reads one I guess. Still, I needed a sharpener that clamps to my desk and I didn't want to pay too much. This does the job nicely and it works. It sort of locks open if you open it fully, but you only have to release the catch to free it. I think that's a design feature, but it's a bit fiddly. I just don't open it fully and have no problem. There is no adjustment to the point of the pencil, so don't sharpen as much.
So, it's basic but it does what it says on the box. That's about as much as you can expect from stationery, isn't it?

Once I started turning the correct way I found it very good :)
The cheaper single blade sharpener cuts into the wood and filling ("lead") at an angle, whereas this type of sharpener scrapes both wood and filling with a set of multiple blades, like scraping with a knife. With coloured pencils this is essential as the fillings are soft, being pigment held by binder, and frequently break in the single blade sharpener. This sharpener also gives a very long point. A long sharp point helps coloured pencils to blend as you lay down the layers of different colours. (For these reasons Ann Swan recommends this sharpener in her excellent book on botanical drawing with coloured pencils).

To take the mechanism out (as some have found this difficult) rotate the milled ring anti-clockwise, it is a bit stiff. There are two lugs that fit in two gaps. The casing is plastic not metal as in the old sharpeners on teacher's desk so it may be less robust for a lot of young children to use, but it is great for individuals.

I'm very pleased with this. I am trying botanical drawing with coloured pencils
and this is a delight. As a retired teacher I've done a bit of pencil sharpening.
Lovely long point possible with this item. Remember to empty the waste drawer before it gets too
full or you will have to unscrew the clamp every time to clear up.

I reckon the size of the sharpener could be increased slightly as it is a bit on the small side. The components work fine but winding the sharpener handle is a bit fiddly. Otherwise it's ok and my students like it.

If you are fed up with the hand blisters and grazes that those cheap pencil sharpeners tend to leave behind, this product is for you.

This is a quality product that is easy to use. The sharpener comes complete with a desk grip that keeps the product stable while pencils are sharpened.

This is an excellent sharpener. Not cheap but the quality is outstanding. A really good point is produced although the only slightly negative thing is the amount of pencil used to obtain it. Definately worth the money.

This is great for getting a sharp point on your pencil - well worth the monay as it doesn't just keep breaking the lead like other sharpeners I've used.

I was delighted when I started using this sharpener today, as I need sharp leads for my fine work, including botanical illustrations. The points were tremendous.

I had read the 1 * review so was very careful. But a lead snapped after 18 karismacolor pencils, and a graphite one.

I fiddled, then came back to these reviews. I am so glad I did as i found the solution in the comments section of the 1 * when I read read Ann Swan's advice. I had tried and failed, until then to open the blade section. I knew it could come out as there is a photo in her book showing this. It is very firm, but can be done.

Once inside the barrel I could not see how I would gouge out the stuck lead, until I saw it peaking over the top. So pushed it down, and all was well.

I will carry on with this, and keep you up to date id there are any other issues. While I was in 'despair' my eye wandered to other spiral sharpeners, which offered different blade settings. But I will stick with this for the moment. I imagine it can cope with most thrown at it, and if I want shorter leads I can use my old sharpeners. This is for the finest points after all.
