Years on, I still don't consider this Akercocke's first album to be honest, and you'd think it'd be clear to anyone that this is merely a collection of demo recordings, which the other reviews on here make no mention of. I thought you should be warned: the songs on here sound like you would expect them to if you were aware that the band recorded them themselves for a giggle and discovered to their own surprise that a record label wanted to release them. That is to say, it sounds awful.
Yes, the typical Akercocke elements are there- bizarre chords, blasting for Satan and heaps upon heaps of sexual content- but they're almost totally lost in the sort of flat, self-funded production that amateur musicians without a producer were capable of back in the late 1990s. There are even a couple of demos recorded in the EARLY 1990s thrown into the mix that sound even worse! It's definitely a curio for 'Cocke fans but the five star reviews on this page are misleading. Perhaps if this had aspirations of intentional 'necro' production I could let it slide but it's clear from Akercocke's later efforts that this was never their goal. Save your money and start with Goat Of Mendes instead, which as far as quality and concentration are concerned is the REAL debut album from this mighty and truly unique band.
