Based on the legends of Easter Island, Chile, this story details a civil war between the two tribes on the island: the Long Ears and the Short Ears. A warrior from the ruling class falls in love with a girl from the lower class, and must decide on his position in a time of great civil unrest. The ruling class are demanding larger and larger Moai (stone statues), a task which the lower class and the island ecology are more and more reluctant to provide.

This film is a masterpiece. It has everything right - credible and passionate plot, likeable heroes, a horrible villain, a sweet and cute damsel in distress, great images, really unique place of action, great tragedies and some humour, and also sport rivalry, civil war, religion dilemma and some cannibalism. And a really great ending! So how comes that it didn't have more success? It is beyond my ability to uderstand. At least me I loved it and I will never forget it.
Drama is played out against good photographic scenic shots of Easter Island. Dialogue is in venacular with English sub-titles which adds to realism. Quality of picture and sound is good. Several threads to the story. A sporting challenge to determine which clan will be paramount. A comming of age love triangle set in pre-modern society. A feudal setting with people grouped into 'long ears' class of overseers/priests and 'short ears' serfs. Finally, the environment being depleted by not husbanding resources and puuting excessive effort into making statues.
