Product Description

This book is based on a series of sermons preached at Kensington Baptist Church in Bristol. The author has increasingly, and beyond his expectations, been drawn in by the sheer power of the story-telling. Grasping something of the skilled and beautiful construction of the gospel has frequently shed fresh light on familiar passages; recognising the half-concealed links to the Old Testament prophets has opened up new understanding of the mission of the Lord Jesus. Mark's gospel focuses on the Lord Jesus as the crucified Christ; as his followers we are called to take up our cross and follow him who gave his life as a ransom for many. If this book encourages you in this path of discipleship, it will have achieved its purpose.

I bought this a while ago as I was acquainted with Steve Wilmshurst as he had lectured me on Revelation at college and his comments on my work were always incredibly helpful(he has also written a very good commentary on it in this series). As I have just started preaching through Mark after spending some time praying through the passage and putting down an outline I read through the appropriate parts of this as well as reading the introduction. Basically it caught my attention immediately. Steve makes the point, which I think is incredibly useful, that people often get bothered by what the Gospel writers leave out (what I mean by this is when they exclude events that are found in the other Gospels). But he makes the point that each Gospel writer is presenting an aspect of Christ ministry for the target audience that they are writing to, in Marks case, Gentiles (non-Jews). To put it bluntly, Matthew is a Gospel aimed at Jews which would mean very little to a Gentile audience. What Mark is aiming to do is to give an account of Jesus's ministry that is 'a page turner' with the kind of accessibility that would find its way onto the equivalent of every coffee table in the Roman Empire! This is a very helpful principle to understand before even before starting to look at the Gospel, so I was absolutely griped just from reading the introduction. However, what is also good is that the commentary on the text literally achieves the same thing! Believe you me there is nothing staid or dry about Steve's exposition of the text as even in the explanation of it he manages to keep a real pace to the narrative without sacrificing detail! Other than that all the key ingredients you need for a good commentary here. The text manages to not just overview the passage but also give real insight into it.Read more ›

We are using this book as the major help/supplement to teaching Mark's gospel to our Sunday School class. It is excellent, easy to read and goes into depth as a study guide.
