Synopsis

In 14th century England, Alys de Renneville sits alone in the loft of her manor house mourning her father and brother who are thought to have been killed in battle in Scotland. Late one evening, a strange knight appears and tells Alys that her father and brother are alive and being held for ransom by the Scots. But when no one believes her story, she sets off secretly to rescue them herself. Travelling on horseback across the lush countryside and dense cities of Medieval England, Alys is accompanied only by her friend and servant, Hugh. Alys and Hugh show great courage and determination on their difficult journey, but they encounter so much hardship and delay along the way that we have to wonder: will they ever be able to reach Scotland and save Alys' father and brother?

Format: Paperback
This is a well written tale of a young girl's adventure and fortitude in the face of great hardship. The attention to historical detail makes this story set in the 14th Century really interesting. It's a riveting page turner which could be enjoyed by anyone of any age. I first read this book 30 years ago and I am delighted to have found it again.

Strong Young-Adult protagonists, especially the teenage girl 25 Aug. 2014
By bmuse - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Barbara Leonie Picard's full-length young-adult fiction favors the age of chivalry, although she did step beyond that era for the Jacobite rebellion in "The Young Pretenders." "Ransom for a Knight" stays in the medieval period. The hostage knight is a mature man, with motherless, nearly grown-up children. The daughter, against all odds, resolves to rescue her father.

Not five stars, only because the story has less appeal for me personally, it is just a question of taste. For those to whom this young-adult fiction appeals, the book has much to commend it: Picard's usual encyclopedic-level knowledge and research into the historical background, and action which takes the characters on a lengthy journey over much ground and through many hazards. Yes, the ending is a fulfilling one, but I won't spoil it further.
