About the Author

Ambush Alley Games are the producers of fine historical, horror, and science fiction miniature games. Founded in 2007, this Oklahoma-based company captured the imaginations of modern military gamers with their flagship game, Ambush Alley, and followed up on that success with Ambush Z (a zombie & horror/survival game), various well-received historical expansions, and Force on Force, a rule-set for asymmetrical and kinetic warfare in the post-war to modern period.

I thought this would be just another source book, with a few scenarios and maybe a few new rules. But this book is crammed full of scenarios. It includes all the prominent scenes from Black Hawk Down and a few other, both historical and hypothetical. As for new rules there's a few but about enough to make it fit the setting, the only one I don't like is the rather silly "Khat chewers", with bonus in daytime and negative effect at night.

The historical facts spread make this a interesting read. But this also is my only problem, since the rules and scenarios are filled with "fluff" it's a bit difficult to find the rules in game.

I only recently bought "Force on Force" by Ambush Alley games; the quality of the ruleset is amazing so it was a no-brainer when it came to the decision to buy this book. The Somali conflict caught my eye after I saw the film "Black Hawk Down" and after reading a little history of the Somali conflict I decided my Force on Force games would be set in this theatre of operations.

This book contains everything a wargamer could possibly ever need regarding the peace-keeping operations in Somalia, and the scenarios are so well done, I reckon the use of this book will extend to other games set in different eras.

A great resource for modern wargaming 10 May 2012

Ambush Alley Games and Osprey Publishing deliver a thorough update and expansion of the original AAG scenario book, Day of the Rangers.

Overall, the new book is clearly organized and well-written with good photography and illustrations. It opens with a brief overview providing historical background on the Somali conflict. Special rules for barricades, fast roping and helicopter attacks add to the setting without unnecessarily complicating the core Force on Force ruleset. From there, we get straight into the scenarios.

Day of the Rangers includes 20 game scenarios covering more than 70 pages. That's twice as many scenarios as the original supplement. More than half are directly based on historical events, allowing you to recreate battles like the last stand at Super Six-Four. Each scenario follows a consistent format with a detailed map and information on force composition, missions, reinforcements and relevant special rules. Notes on historical outcomes offer welcome context.

An 8-page section on sample unit organizations (fireteams, squads, platoons) follows. U.S. Marines, Rangers and Special Forces get the lion's share of attention. But we're also introduced to other nations of the UN coalition: Belgium, Canada, Italy, Pakistan and Malaysia. Rounding out the book are helpful appendices such as vehicle rules and theater-specific Fog of War cards.

If you're interested in small-unit wargaming in a modern setting, Day of the Rangers sets the bar high in terms of both content and production value. It's definitely a welcome supplement to the Force on Force game system.

Maalintii Rangers 17 April 2012
By C. Faulkner - Published on
Format: Paperback
This third supplement in Osprey's foray into the field of modern wargaming covers Operation Gothic Serpent, the code name given to the assignment handed to Task Force Ranger in Somalia, 1993. Included are orders of battle for the Belgian Airborne, Canadian Airborne and Armored Infantry, Italian Airborne, Malaysia, Pakistan, US Marines, the US Army's 10th Mountain and of course, the boys from the 75th Rangers and Delta. Also included are scenarios, both real and fabricated, that allow players to re-fight historical and hypothetical situations that represent the type of conflict being fought during the UN mission in Somalia. And of course, as the title implies, there are also a series of scenarios designed, either as a linked campaign or stand-alone games, to simulate the events of 3 and 4 October, 1993.
