Another brillant episode in this series of stories. I haven't been able to put these books down since a started reading part 1 which introduced the reader to the rangers apprentice Will. This part sees Will going it alone in trying to stop an invasion, becoming a hero in the process and ends up with him sailing away as a prisoner with his ranger master looking sadly on. It leaves you wanting more and you must get part 3 to continue the story. Although the series (1 - 11) state that you can read them in any order as they are stand alone stories they make more sense read in the correct order. A fabulous read for all ages.

All the Ranger's Apprentice books are excellent. There are brilliant plot twists, real depth and development to the characters, both male and female characters are strong and well drawn and there is good witty humour between them. They are not really dark and the books have good endings but they are not "twee" for all that. Some books, like this one, are part of an extended story. This one has a strong ending but you'll need to read book 3 The Icebound Land to unravel the twist at the end AND book 4 Oakleaf Bearers to get everyone back home safe and sound. But for all that they are well worth it. Hey I've bought them all ... enough said?

In the modern world, too often are we made to feel inadequate and as such we end up thinking that we're too small, to weak and unwanted enough to be able to effect change. For a young reader this is something that needs to be corrected and as such this title by John Flanagan demonstrates wonderfully that you don't have to be the biggest guy in the pack to help make a difference or the strongest and that thought can a lot of the time out do brute force.
Add to this a wonderful story that takes the young reader on a fantasy journey as an apprentice learns the trade of the Ranger and discovers friendships can last and be forged despite the start that you have in life. It's clever, it's got great courage and fully supports the positive mental attitude that we all wish we could instil. Finally add to this a huge story arc, cracking characters that the reader will love to hang around and it's a tale that will have the reader demanding more. Great stuff.

Excellent Series
Bought this series for my eldest boy, 8. He loves them and can't wait for the next instalmanet as each one comes out. Keeps him glued to his books for hours!
