5.0 out of 5 stars Another superb book from Flanagan. 7 Feb 2009
The second one in the Ranger's Apprentice series and equally as good as the first. There are strange things afoot in Celtica and Will and his companions go off to investigate. I will say no more as anything will ruin the story! Suffice to say the relationships between the characters are more fully developed, new characters are introduced and the book ends on a wonderful cliffhanger - very frustrating! The language continues to delight and it is a wonderful book to read out loud. Make sure, however, that you do not make a mistake when you buy these books: there are different titles and covers dependent on where the book is published and this can be very confusing and irritating. It is not made clear enough on the Amazon site but if you have a look at Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice site you will see what I mean. Enjoy this!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Characters Really Shone Through 18 Aug 2014
Book two in The Ranger’s Apprentice series sees Will off on an embassy convoy with Gilan and Horace. They have been chosen to visit King Swyddned of Celtica to acquire support for the upcoming war against Morgarath. However when they arrive in Celtica, there is no one to be seen.

Again I found the story to be interesting however predictable. I was a little flummoxed though because some of the plot lines were SO OBVIOUS it was almost ridiculous and then others were a complete mystery and had me guessing. I’m not sure what works better – having it predictable or ridiculously predictable at the same time as being mysterious. Maybe having it not predictable at all :) Anyway aside from that, it was still really interesting and enjoyable to read.

Again the characters really shone through. Will is extremely likeable and you just want to reach into the book and give him a big hug. The other characters were strong and well written and you just can’t help feeling like you’re one of them. I did find Evanlyn slightly annoying however I don’t know if that’s me rather than the book as I don’t tend to gravitate to a lot of female protagonists.

Also just a warning – the book does leave you on a cliffhanger so you might want to have the next book handy!

Again I would definitely recommend this book for children and even adults if you like fantasy and adventure. However you really need to start at the beginning with the first book, The Ruins of Gorlan.

5.0 out of 5 stars As great as book 1 17 April 2006
We loved it as much as book one (Australian edition published earlier). This is a great series, loved by mother as much as by son. Fast moving, full of suspense and adventure, trials and triumphs, makes you wish you could really be a part of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great writing! 5 Jun 2014

I hadn't read any books by this author until I came across his "Brotherband" books. Although he writes for children (teens), his books are fast moving, exciting and yet reflective, giving both the adolescent's and adult's viewpoint. Compulsive reading - so much so that I have now begun the "Ranger's Apprentice" series. They are of the same high quality of writing.

Good story shame about the mixed time scale since when in medieval times did uncle tom Cobbley live and as for waltzing no way. Still was a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 29 Dec 2013

great story lines very captivating but 2 problems.
firstly, surely they would not have access to coffee in the medieval settings the book is written. also they would not have used kilometres or hours and these measurements were not available to them at this time.???
but as I said, captivating and therefore can't let the above spoil my enjoyment and eagerness to read the next book.
