Randy's Progress 27 Aug 2007
Format:Audio CD
Randy Pie were a tight, funky little German band from the mid-70s, a really nice blend of soul and rock far removed from all preconceptions of Krautrock or Euro-disco. They made a few trips to Britain, most memorably as part of a triple bill with Sassafrass and A Band Called O. This twofer represents their first and third albums: UK buyers beware - the "Randy Pie" album here is their GERMAN album of that name, not the BRITISH "Randy Pie" release, which was in fact their renamed second album, known outside the UK as "Highway Driver" and available as part of a different twofer release! Track listing therefore:

RANDY PIE
1. Autumn
2. Ad Hoc
3. Sightseeing Tour
4. Outside Inside
5. Luie
6. 6/8
7. Back to Universe
KITSCH
8. Kitsch
9. Goin' thru the Motions
10. The Captain
11. I Am the Joker
12. Iron Otto
13. Mirage Europlane
14. Dancing Shoes
BONUS
15. Funky Scholle (B-side of England England single)

The band's sound was characterised by funky keyboards and the crisp bass riffs, the latter the driving force particularly on the first album, which is a tight rather underproduced collection of what are essentially jams. Titles like Ad Hoc and 6/8 give the game away - these tracks are the product no doubt of having to play long, LONG sets in the bars of Hamburg. It wasn't until the second album that their songwriting skills developed and tracks began to have more structure. By the time they recorded "Kitsch" they were at the top of their game and expanding their soul credentials with strong brass and string arrangements. Only the sentimental ballad The Captain and the blatant attempt at a pop hit Dancing Shoes let the pace drop below top quality funk rock.

If you like your rock funky, or your soul rocky, you'll enjoy this slice of 70s German music history.
