Amazon.co.uk Review

The twist of private-eye show Randall & Hopkirk Deceased is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, only to pop up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner, Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). In theory, the supernatural streak--which meant a complex set of rules about Marty's appearances and effects on the physical world--should lead the show into wilder territory, but most episodes squander the team's unique abilities on ordinary cases about blackmail and murder-for-profit. A persistent subplot has the living Jeff getting cozy with the dead Marty's widow Jean (Annette Andre) to the discomfort of her late husband. The elementary effects and the nice underplaying of the leads have a certain period charm, and the show was able to afford a high caliber of special guest villains and beautiful women. A 1990s remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original. --Kim Newman

Format:DVD
I really enjoyed this DVD being a fan of the series and of Vic and Bob, but why oh why did they make the DVD in the 4:3 format instead of the broadcast widescreen version. At times it really shows with faces barely appearing on screen or people half off the picture. I have awarded this DVD 4 stars because I have knocked one off for the screen size not being the same as the broadcast version - its only a small gripe but important (in my humble opinion)

Be wary! 31 Oct 2001

Format:DVD
Although the series is very entertaining, be very wary of buying this DVD. The original 16:9 widescreen versions of the episodes are all presented here in 4:3 ratio. Utter madness and a complete waste of time.

Easy viewing. 9 Nov 2001
Format:DVD
Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves slide into the roles of Jeff Randall and Marty Hopkirk with the ease of a hot Fry and Laurie into a PG Wodehouse made entirely of butter. Or something.

Not to give too much away, but Marty (Vic) dies horribly in the first episode, and the remainder of the series is Jeff (Bob) coming to terms with life without Marty, life with Marty's ghost, and life with Marty's ghost's ex-fiance-to-be. And they have madcap primetime off beat detective style adventures too.

A fabulous range of guest stars in this, including Charles Dance, Charlie Higson, Martin Clunes, Charlie Higson, The League of Gentlemen and many more...

Bonus material includes bloopers and a "making of" features, better than nothing.

The worst features are the dubbing, it's out of sync all over the show. Also there's no scene selection.

Effortless and entertaining viewing for everyone.

Good entertainment
This is a very good series, obviously based on the original 1969/72 series. But nowhere close to matching it. Read more

waste of time
Why did they bother? This series was a very poor rip off of a great series from the 60`s. The only good thing in this effort was the special effects which were brilliant. Read more

Brilliant show, shame about the DVD
I loved this show when it was first screened. Yes, the attempts at 'straight' acting by Vic and Bob were sometimes dreadful, but their characters were so likeable you could forgive... Read more

Good series, shame a third of it is missing.
Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) with Vic and Bob is a hugley enjoyable series, and the DVD should have been superb - remasted sound, decent extras. Read more
