Biography

You couldn’t invent the story of Nazareth if you tried. At their peak, the Dunfermline rock group were huge, selling vast quantities of albums and pulling in enormous crowds to their shows. By rights, when the group’s profile receded a little and they morphed into the highly respected club-level regulars that they are today, their reputation should have become tarnished – but ... CD Description

180 grams audiophile vinyl / Gatefold sleeve / Bonus Track : 'Down' (b-side of 'Love Hurts' single) --This text refers to the Vinyl edition.

About the Artist

Nazareth's second 1974 album 'Rampant' finds the group tempering the four-on-the-floor hard rock attack they developed on 'Loud and Proud' by working a surprising and effective Southern rock edge into the songs. The end result is an album that sounds like a 'early AC/DC meets Lynyrd Skynyrd at their hardest rocking'. Some of the country-tinged highlights include 'Glad When You're Gone' a funny kiss-off to an unwanted lover that airs hillbilly-styled singing with wah-wah-drenched guitar riffs, and 'Jet Lag', a tongue-in-cheek look at life as a touring rock & roller. However, the finest song in this vein is the powerful opener 'Silver Dollar Forger', which feels like the theme song to the great 1970's car chase movie that never was. This gatefold sleeved edition of the album contains the B-side to the 'Love Hurts' 7 inch single as a bonus. --This text refers to the Vinyl edition.

Nazareth's fifth studio release saw Deep Purple's Roger Glover take the production controls again and Nazareth have made an album of diversity that you rarely hear from rock groups.
You still get the hard rockers that you expect from the Dunfirmline quartet, but you also get some songs with great humour and maybe, just maybe the best ballad Nazareth have ever done. The opening track, Silver Dollar Forger sets the tone for this album, it certainly rocks hard but you also get the feeling that Nazareth was in the mood for experimentation. The song sounds like nothing you have heard before, but the boys pull it off nicely. Shanghai'd In Shanghai was the single from the album and it has Nazareth toning down the power slightly, probably in order to secure a bit more radio play; it didn't work but the song is still an excellent example of how a single can still have the hard rock sound without necessarily being a hard rock song. Glad When Your Gone and Jet Lag have humour in abundance, and all wrapped up in catchy fast paced tunes; they will fast become favourites from the album. Loved And Lost and Light My Way are ballads with another experimental flavour to them with Dan McCafferty going for the echoy vocal sound. The album closes with a cover of The Yardbirds song Shapes Of Things, a song that shows that nobody can cover a song better than Nazareth. It would have made a great single, but the record company opted for the more radio friendly option. One track still to mention is Sunshine, probably the best and most beautiful Nazareth ballad to date. This song is a big favourite in Canada to play at weddings.

agree with pikie1977 but this is album is one of their best because of that experimentation and diversity it should also be noted that guns n roses ripped of part of the guitar solo from patience of sunshine and that the intro to shanghai'd in shanghai sounds a lot like David Lee Roths yankee rose, actually guns n roses are what nazareth would have sounded like if they had came from America ;-)

While not as immediate as its 2 predeccesors, this is a slow burner and worth sticking with, slightly darker, grittier production from Purple's Roger Glover, his 3rd and final outing, makes it less commercial sounding than the earlier releases.

Still you have a bona fide classic single in 'Shanghiad in Shangia', humour galore in 'Glad When Your Gone/Jet Lag',plaintive ballad/pop dripping with emotion on 'Loved and Lost' and 'Sunshine' while album opener 'Silver Dollar Forger' is classic heavy rock plain and simple, which leaves only the cover of 'Shapes of Things' which doesnt quite hit the spot for me.

Bonus tracks are 'Down' a b'side back in the day, good old fashioned heavy rock while the remainder is 7 live tracks from 1973 includin Razamanaz/Broken Down Angel and a superb Morning Dew.

Packaging excellent, superb digi pak with decent booklet, sound quality excellent ,although not too different to the Snapper classics release circa 2008.

well done again to salvo.

When i was growing up i listened to Queen,Thin Lizzy,Status Quo and Pink Floyd,to name but a few.I had heard of Nazareth but did'nt know much about them,so lately i have got in to them in a big way and because it's kinda new to me its fresh.Rampant is the fifth album and is one of the best. The cd come's remastered and in a gatefold cover,in side there is an exstensive booklet with sleeve notes by Dan Mc Cafferty lead singer with the band. All in all a good package and an excellent album.

This is the third album to have been produced by Roger Glover and I must say I really enjoy this album. Its a bit lighter in sound from the previous two albums Loud n Proud and Razamanaz but is still more than worth a place in your collection. The remastering on the album is good;note that there is a 2010 newly remaster edition from Salvo now available,I own Procol Harum albums on this label and there remastering is superb. On this Eagle remaster sound quality is of high standard.Extra tracks here include Shanghai;D Shanghai.US version.Cats Eyes Apple Pies and Shapes Of Things;single edit.
I haven given Rampant 5 stars as it really is a good album and marks the end of an era with Roger Glover producing.Album begs to be played out and is a must for your Naz collection.Hope review is of some help.

One of my all-time favourite albums. Nazareth are an under rated band who are still performing today with two of the original members. Dan McCafferty is one of the great voices of Rock.
