Product Description

Don’t panic (and apologies for the deliberate miss-spelling in the title. If you haven’t guessed it’s German for iceberg). Neue Deutsche Härte (New German Hardness) is not our Western European pals gearing up for a third crack at global domination. Rather, it is a form of predominantly German industrial metal which utilises heavy distorted metal guitars, synthesisers, samples, pounding drums and lyrics sung mostly though not exclusively in the German language.

Rammstein are by far the most high profile and successful of the NDH bands, however they are not alone. They cannot even be considered the founders of the NDH movement. That honour must probably go to the interestingly named but fantastic Oomph! who were founded in 1989 and initially defined the genre with their second album Sperm in 1992, when Rammstein were merely a glint in the eye of Richard Z Kruspe, and who have subsequently released eleven mostly brilliant studio albums. Similarly the very wonderful Megaherz were formed in 1993, which we could refer to as 1BR (one year before Rammstein) and are still releasing stunning Rammstein-esque albums today.

So, this small introduction to NDH is not intended to belittle the work of our heroes, the mighty Rammstein, who are still in my humble opinion the greatest and most innovative boundary pushing NDH band, and whose live show needs to be seen to be believed. Instead the intention is to provide the Rammstein fan with a very brief primer to a few of the other bands within the genre that may not be on their musical radar. Some sound almost identical to Rammstein and some nothing like them. The fantastic Subway to Sally for example occasionally sounds like a cross between Megadeth and Wing’s ‘Mull of Kintyre’. That description would get me running to the hills? Trust me; it’s surprisingly good and rather addictive.

I’ve included recommendations for my preferred albums and tracks for each artist, as well as a quick assessment as to how similar I feel they are to our heroes, for those that may want to cut to the chase and try to identify Rammstein 2 in a hurry. Let’s invent a word and call it their Rammsteinessence.

I’ve also tried to keep the band information quite brief, as the point of this little book (with a little price!!) is to whet the appetite so that the you, the reader and probable Rammstein fan, goes forth and discovers the bands I am suggesting. So unfortunately there’s no ‘The band were formed in a public toilet on 23rd March 2003 just after band leader Willie Dong had finished a chicken korma at his local curry house ‘Das Flaming Tonsils’ on Bangalore Strasse in Darmstadt. Willie was wearing jeans and a particularly fetching ‘Macc Lads T-Shirt, with trainers and…..’. If you want that level of detail check out the band’s website (which I’ve included if they have one) or Google it.

Can I finish this introduction by saying that this list is by no means comprehensive. There will be many NDH bands out there that are not included, and it is a source of joy to me that I still have those bands to discover. If anyone wishes to recommend any other bands then please feel free and enlighten me. Thanks in advance, as they say.
