Unimpressed With Content 5 Oct 2011
By Fair and Honest - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The majority of the Book was a Glossy Presentation of Rammed Earth Only, best suited for a third world appetite for general knowledge. Lacking was any substantial discussion on Stabilized Rammed Earth, only six brief pages devoted to Cement or other binding additives to strengthen basic Rammed Earth. Since the book is intended for an english speaking audience, I would say it missed the mark on contributing anything needed or useful to anyone strongly considering a Viable Rammed Earth Structure, living in a western culture. I say Viable instead of Stabilized because I refer to the constant need for maintenance and the ever present possiblity of structural failure of Rammed Earth without Stabilization by additives. Considering the Book's content of Basic Rammed Earth, the reader would still need to consult a comprehensive design and construction guide book before beginning a project. I learned as much from free internet surfing on this subject as I did from reading this book. It was wholely a waste of my money. I would strongly urge anyone interested in the subject to skip this title and proceed to "Earth Construction - A Comprehensive Guide" by Hugo Houben and Hubert Guillaud. Please look for my review of this in a few weeks. The time will be needed to digest it's extensive contents, but so far it has turned out to be the only book I should have bought on the complete subject of Rammed Earth.
