Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Six hours of monosyllabic John Rambo high jinks, best savoured in surround sound (for the bone-rattling explosions) and with your brain on pause (for everything else). Sylvester Stallone's second signature character, after Rocky, a seething ex-Green Beret killing machine, went from Viet-vet victim in the original picture, First Blood, flipping out over the ingratitude of his beloved homeland, to a muscle-bound terminator in Rambo III, mowing down Commies in the deserts of Afghanistan. The middle chapter, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, written by James Cameron and directed by George Pan Cosmotos, is the most balanced and satisfying of the three films: Rambo is dropped back into 'Nam to rescue some POWs, and the action builds steadily in scale and ferocity. Each fireball seems to be bigger than the last. Of all the recent headbanger action movies, only the first Die Hard offers more bang for the buck. The underrated character actor Richard Crenna (a standout sleazebag in Body Heat), as Rambo's military mentor and staunch defender, is the series' secret weapon, providing some welcome human ballast. --David Chute

All too often these three films have been given bad reviews by too many people. After watching the films I remembered just how brilliant they were. First was not about violence it was just about how Rambo snapped after being constantly hassled by the town sherriff while trying to get over hearing about the death of the last remaining member of the unit from cancer which was supposedly because of exposure to agent orange. First blood part 2 was good because of the fact that it really showed up the corruption and backstabbing that existed in the Pentagon. who can forget what Rambo said into the transmitter and what colour the Pentagon fellas face changed. Rambo 3 was a bit too fantastic as he took on the Soviet army in Afghanistan and won and of course he did it for his friend. It amazes me though how the explosive tipped arrows considering how small they were, were able to blow up the Soviet gunship as it took the best part of 500-600 rounds from the twin machine gun. Apart from a few mistakes like where did the bow and arrow come from after the helicopter crashed as he left with only his knife and a gun from the wreakage it made for a good storyline with a very relevant start to the film with the contreversial supply of stingers to the mujahideen. This is the trilogy to buy if you are after good action films, good storylines and somebody who just seems unvincible. its just brilliant and well worth the money.

I thought that this was a DVD set and didn't realise that it was a VHS set as the original add did not specify. I had a fab response though from the supplier and was refunded the money promptly, so I would use the supplier again in future.

One of the best films to come out of the "action era" of the 80's (i.e. Schwarzenegger, Stallone et al) was First Blood. Not so much violent, as tense and actually rather exciting.

This was followed up by Rambo:First Blood Pt2 and I can still remember the news feature on the 9 O'Clock news saying how violent and deplorable this kind of film was. It was also very anti-Russian which seemed to be a theme for Stallone for some reason (Rambo 3 and Rocky 4).

Then Rambo 3 came along. 1 man against the might of the Russian Afghan based army...and the 1 man wins. Hardly realistic but good fun.

Each film scores high on it's own merit. The 3 of them are still timeless action classics in my book and if you want a good blast of an action film there is nothing better than throwing these on the old VCR.

If you haven't seen these films but are a fan of the action genre then I heartily recommend them and you will enjoy them very much. They haven't aged at all and there is some superb stunt work in all 3 films and plenty of shooting and explosions especially in the last 2 films.

It's a shame these kind of films don't seem to be around these days as they really are good fun if you can forgive the lack of deep plot or Oscar winning acting. Overall...3 classic films which no action fan should be without.
