It's easy to forget that this Spartan, violent film, which begat the Rambo series, was such a big hit in 1982 because it was a good movie. Green Beret vet John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) wanders into the wrong small town to find a fellow 'Nam buddy and gets the living heck kicked out of him by the local law enforcement (led by Brian Dennehy). The vet strikes back the only way he knows how, leading to a visceral, if unrealistic, flight and fight through the local mountains. Based on the 1972 novel by David Morrell, this film saved Stallone's then-foundering career and the Rambo character became the inspiration for countless political cartoons. But this film is Deliverance without the moral ambiguity. --Keith Simanton

John Rambo is a vietnam veteran,winner of the congressional medal of honor, a war hero. Now the war is over and Rambo is finding it increasingly difficult to re-adjust to civilian life. After a petty incident with a small town cop, Rambo is arrested for vagrancy - a move that culminates in one of the biggest and most violent manhunts in film history. Rambo uses all his military experience and combat techniques to wage a one man war against a police force that does not seem to understand or even care about truth, justice, and the American way.
'First Blood' is enormously under-rated, due mainly to the hype and success of it's sequals, 'Rambo: First Blood Part Two', and 'Rambo Three'. 'First Blood' is the true original, it is stylish, subtle and most importantly makes a genuine statement about the treatment of many battle scarred soldiers after their return to civilian life. Stallone's acting is impressively sensitive. In 'First Blood', he shows a very human and real side to Rambo's nature. So much more then the action heroes that have become so popular since the films release. Definately one to watch.

This film is the best in the Rambo series because I understand the character and I understand why he is acting violent."First Blood" doesn't bring us John Rambo,the action hero but John Rambo,a regular man with a lot of demons he must face."First Blood" is the best of the Rambo series.

Rambo: First Blood [DVD] [1982]...The emotional performance given by Sly Stallone in this masterpiece is nothing short of stunning. This film portrays the way that American society shamelessly shunned, spat at and castigated the returning soldiers of the Vietnam War.
John J. Rambo walks through the wrong town at the wrong time and walks right into an ignorant, small time sherrif, excellently played by Brian Dennehey. What insues next is probably one of the greatest, violent, emotional and very political manhunts in cinema history. The disturbing thing is that at the time ( 1982), you can imagine it really happening in America. That is what makes this work of art so captivating.
If you've never seen it, then buy, rent or obtain urgently. It is an enigma.
This totally wipes the floor with it's big budget Hollywood follow-ups " Rambo II" & " Rambo III". Only the magnificent final Rambo film walks hand in hand with this and gives a fitting end to the highly scarred and emotionally wounded John.J.
