If you've been wondering what ever happened to ex–Green Beret super warrior John Rambo since he singlehandedly shot up a Pacific Northwest town (First Blood, 1982), returned to the jungles of 'Nam to free U.S. POWs held long after war's end (Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1985), and interrupted the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan long enough to blow lots of stuff up and rescue his old commandant from the Reds (Rambo III, 1988), then Rambo (2008) is for you. Without so much as a IV to dilute the brand name, Rambo --which is what most of us called the second, most iconic film in the series--may aspire to open a new era for a pop legend. But it's a thoroughly mechanical attempt to re-animate a franchise that, absent the anger, frustration, and self-loathing of the post-Vietnam years, has no meaning or purpose. For some time now Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) has been putt-putting along the Thai-Burmese border in a longboat, catching exotic snakes to sell. As for the 60-year civil war in Burma between the brutal government and the Karen independence movement, he ignores it. Enter a party of American missionaries whose dewy blond spokeswoman (Dexter's Julie Benz) asks Rambo to haul them upriver so that they can bring medical aid to the insurgents. After the requisite number of monosyllabic refusals, he does. Soon afterward the do-gooders are in a world of hurt, and he's summoned to lead a squad of mercenaries on a rescue mission.
As storytelling, the latest Rambo is the most bare-bones of the bunch. Rambo has little to say, so it's especially galling that Stallone, as director and co-writer, obliges him to have essentially the same conversation at three different points (the final distillation: "Live for nothing or die for something"). The Burmese army goons seem in competition to commit the most hideous atrocity (e.g., child skull-crushing underfoot), the better to justify the eventual, lovingly protracted spectacle of them being eviscerated by high-powered weaponry. Although shot in Thailand, the movie has mostly been photographed in brown, reducing any particular sense of place but, perhaps, perversely increasing our gratitude for the splashes of purple whenever hot metal tatters flesh. --Richard T. After nearly 20 years, Sylvester Stallone returns to the role of John Rambo as he battles dozens of ruthless soldiers in search of a group of salvation workers who have gone missing.
If there was one word to sum up this film it would be "violent". The first three movies were violent back in the day, but with today's special effects, this film is ultra-realistic and disturbing when it comes to the explicit and brutal gore in this movie. The action is literally non-stop from the start and being at just over an hour and a quarter (not including the end credits) there's no time for this film to slow down at all and all the better for it. Sly is great as Rambo and is as good as he was back in his prime in the 80s and it feels like he's never been away from the role.
The Blu Ray quality is superb with perhaps one of the best discs for picture quality as everything looks just so sharp and is really clear. Even on the darker scenes there appeared to be next-to no graininess that I've noticed on other Columbia/Tri Star/Sony Pictures Blu Rays.
Overall it's not the most intelligent of movies but the Rambo series never has been, but it makes up for this with some great action and excitement and some great special effects (even if they are a bit sick). I recommend this film to anyone who loves old 80s action films and anyone who doesn't get shocked too easily.

This is by far the most visceral, brutal and downright ultra-violent movie I have ever seen.
This quite surprised me, but it appears that Stallone has employed some new and rather ground-breaking cinematic techniques in the filming of the action scenes, as the level of carnage which is portrayed is simply breathtaking. JR dispenses this violence with such relish and gusto that I found myself laughing out loud in appreciation at the film-makers' dedication to this cause.
The fact that Stallone can still kick it at 60 is a real point of interest, and really adds to the film. With his dinosaur-sized neck and his permanent scowl, he looks hard as hell, and we soon discover that he is!
Yes it's gratuitous, but perhaps the stark pointless violence is itself a point that the movie is making? Certainly the scantness of story and the non-happy ending back this up.
Either way, it's ridiculously entertaining, and it's 5 stars.

I have never been a big fan of Stallone in any film apart from the Rambo series which are just brillant. The first Rambo "First Blood" has to go down as one of my favourite films of all time the other two were watchable. Mr Stallone decided to make one more Rambo before he retires from the acting arena did he do the right thing. Your answer to that question is yes he did this film was a brillant end to a classic trilogy in my eyes. This film was a carnage and at times was pretty brutal from the word go and he still looked the part his acting has never been the best it doesn't need to be in this film as long as he has got his knife, bow and arrows oh and the odd machine gun nobody screws with Rambo. With this selection of weapons he rips the bad boys apart with ease with some nasty violence which has plenty of blood and body parts flying around. The special effects were top draw stuff the story was easy to follow you just need to switch off and watch the screen legend Rambo's final assult and it's well worth the watch. My only moan is the film was on the short side and the ending was a little rushed but who cares the rest of the film was Rambo at his very best. In some ways I hope he does another film and in some ways I hope he doesn't this was a very neat and tidy film to finish on I have two more words left to say BUY IT!!

A brilliantly violent action movie.
I have to admit to being not much of a Stallone fan, and while First Blood was a good 80's action movie with a decent storyline the other 'Rambo' films have been fairly bad. Read more
