Book Description

27 May 2010 Collins Ramblers

A brand new range of practical little walk guides endorsed by the Ramblers. All the walks are 5 miles or under in length and can easily be completed in less that 3 hours. 20 walks are included and use clear maps to show the route plus easy to follow walk descriptions.

The Peak District, with its two very different landscapes: the gentle limestone White Peak with its intimate wooded dales and steep-sided gorges; and the wilder more dramatic gritstone Dark Peak with its wild moorland, offer some superb walking areas. This guide, produced in co-operation with the Ramblers and featuring Ordnance Survey mapping, is the perfect way to get out and enjoy the stunning scenery.

This compact little guide contains walks, all of which are 5 miles or under, which are ideal for an afternoon stroll.

INCLUDES:
• 20 easy to follow walks which can be completed in 3 hours and under.

• Each walk has a detailed Ordnance Survey map with the route clearly marked plus a detailed description of the route.

• The walks have been chosen with issues like parking and refreshments in mind to make life easy for families.

• There are interesting facts about the things you'll see along the route.

• All the books include general information on walking and also the general area covered by the guide.

• Packed with colour photographs of scenes you will see along the walk.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short walks in the Peak District 16 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback
Appears to be a carefully chosen set of walks covering the whole Peak District. However having done some of them I agree with the comments by some other reviewers that the walk directions aren't really very good. There's a lack of detail and use of the maps is required to fill in the gaps. In particular the directions often don't give any idea of the distances between the various instructions, leading to confusion.

But I'll carry on using it...

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment 9 July 2012
By cilc
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book with high hopes but so far have been disappointed. I have done two of the walks. The terrain and views have been spectacular. Unfortunately the detailed instructions are often imprecise and unclear. They give the impression of being written by someone looking at a map rather than someone who has actually done the walk. For example today we did walk 4, Shatton Moor. This is described as 'an easy walk' no mention of the steady and long climb that takes up a good two thirds of the walk. My description would be a moderate ascent, certainly not easy. There were no distances between the reference points. There were references to named places that - yes were on the map - but were not actually there on the ground, for example you had to guess which was Townfiled Lane, there was no sign.

In summary this is a good guide to areas of the Peak District that provide good walks. However it is not so good in providing adequate guidance for the precise route to take.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise & Precise 21 Oct 2010
By Aribo
Format:Paperback
This guide really bring the trails of the Peak district to life. On nearly every page, there is at least one vivid account which captivates the mind and soul and transports you right there. Likewise, the write-up of each walk is written in a precise style and makes the reader feel as if they were actually hiking the trail. Lots of useful information too and a very accurate companion to have with you on these walks.

3.0 out of 5 stars great walks not the best of directions 16 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
We're up to the 4th walk in the book at the moment we've been doing one every Sunday come rain, snow or shine and as long as you're well equipped it's great to be out.
This book has some lovely walks starting in some great little villages and is introducing me to parts of the High Peak that I wouldn't possible of discovered. The only quibble I have is that the directions in the book aren't that great and I do find that it trys to take you over farmers fields (even though its a public footpath) when there's no need as if you stayed on the path you're on it joins up with the route anyway.
Best one we've done so far is Derwent Moor lots to see and the grouse are really lovely :)
Looking forward to more walks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Book 24 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
I have found this book to be compact yet accurate. It can easily be carried around on a walk as i've completed one walk so far. It covers, to me, what is a beautiful area of our splendid green island. Definitely worth the money. Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rambling books 2 Dec 2010
By Suki
Format:Paperback
The book arrived very quickly and even though it is not a hardback the cover is very strong and will stand being taken out on many walks before getting dogeared. Due to its size it will fit very easily into either a pocket of a walking jacket or the front pocket of a rucksack.
