Product Description

Product Description

Mutiny and rebellion are rife on board a British ship in the Caribbean. A young British naval officer is chosen to rescue the ship from its Spanish captors - yet this means almost certain death. Lord Ramage soon learns that for his mission to succeed - and for him to stay alive - he must resort to almost any means. Will his skill prove a match for the strength of the Spanish attack?

About the Author

Dudley Bernard Egerton Pope was born in 1925 into an ancient Cornish seafaring family. He joined the Merchant Navy at the age of sixteen and spent much of his early life at sea. He was torpedoed during the Second World War and his resulting spinal injuries plagues him for the rest of his life. Towards the end of the war he turned to journalism becoming the Naval and Defence Correspondent for the London Evening News. Encouraged by Hornblower creator CS Forester, he began writing fiction using his own experiences in the Navy and his extensive historical research as a basis. In 1965 he wrote 'Ramage', the first of his highly successful series of novels following the exploits of the heroic Lord Nicholas Ramage during the Napoleonic Wars. He continued to live aboard boats whenever possible and this was where he wrote the majority of his novels. Dudley Pope died in 1997 aged seventy one.

If you enjoy Patrick O'Brian you will probably like Dudley Pope. Ramage is a naval officer in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and this novel concerns an incident in the West Indies. The mutiny in question is not on his ship, but on a vessel that is delivered to the Spanish by the mutineers (Pope clearly makes the point that mutiny may have been the only way to deal with a mad or evil Captain). Ramage has to undertake the seemingly impossible task of recapturing the vessel.

Pope is good with regard to his understanding of naval warfare of the period, but his main character lacks a foil, and in this respect O'Brian has the advantage in the construction of his novels.

Once again Dudley Popes imagination has run wild and what another captivating storyline this is. Some readers might have thought it dragged on but to the true Naval Fiction enthusiast it just draws you in and is difficult to put down like the rest of his fascinating stories. I have read all of the Ramage novels so far and really look forward to reading the rest, it is such a great shame that an exceptional writer is no longer with us but his work will live forever. I will certainly re-read the whole series again and again along with Alexander Kents Bolitho Series. Do'nt be put off by any other readers negative comments, if you enjoy naval fiction you will certainly enjoy this book.

In this particular book, we find Ramage sailing around the Caribbean. He's given the task of retrieving a ship that mutineers have given over to the Spanish. One captain has already failed. The task is impossible. Can Ramage do it? Of course.

Ramage is a true hero in the old style tradition. You know he will succeed; the joy in these books is reading HOW he will succeed. Rarely is the answer obvious, so his plans are almost always a surprise.
I still think this series would have made (or make) a better TV or movie series than Hornblower. There's a lot of action and adventure here.
