Product Description

Product Description

In recognition of his great achievements at sea, their Lordships of the Admiralty have made Lord Nicholas Ramage captain of a ship of the line - the youngest man to be so honoured since Nelson himself. And so Ramage sets sail on the Dido, a formidable fighting weapon and the most prized war machine of the British Navy. But sooner than expected, Ramage is called upon to test the Dido to the full as his path to the Caribbean is beset with troubles. Thrilling and exhilarating, Ramage and the Dido is a fitting conclusion to Lord Ramage's adventures at sea.

About the Author

Dudley Bernard Egerton Pope was born in 1925 into an ancient Cornish seafaring family. He joined the Merchant Navy at the age of sixteen and spent much of his early life at sea. He was torpedoed during the Second World War and his resulting spinal injuries plagues him for the rest of his life. Towards the end of the war he turned to journalism becoming the Naval and Defence Correspondent for the London Evening News. Encouraged by Hornblower creator CS Forester, he began writing fiction using his own experiences in the Navy and his extensive historical research as a basis. In 1965 he wrote 'Ramage', the first of his highly successful series of novels following the exploits of the heroic Lord Nicholas Ramage during the Napoleonic Wars. He continued to live aboard boats whenever possible and this was where he wrote the majority of his novels. Dudley Pope died in 1997 aged seventy one.

A good read 12 Aug 2008
By Dr J
Format:Paperback
This is the last installment of Dudley Pope's Ramage series. Our hero, Ramage, has finally been given command of a ship of the the line. He is sent ot the Caribbean to deal with the French there. He singlehandedly wins the war for the British in the Caribbean. As another reviewer has mentioned, everything really is too easy for Ramage. Never a tight spot he can't get out of very easily. Why then five stars? This series is really not meant to be very realistic. It's a superman sort of series. The hero always gets out of every jam with little problem. If you keep that in mind, you can enjoy the series. The other reason for five stars is that there is plenty of action--lots of fighting in this book. Not a lot of down time. Also, it's an easy read--the language is easy and it just keeps moving along. So, if you want a simple, hero-oriented series to introduce yourself to the naval fiction genre, this is for you. If you want blood and guts, real life navy, then you might want to move on to something else.
I am a bit surprised that this is the last in the series. The last line even indicates that there is more in store for Ramage. No loose ends are tied up. Yes, I know that Pope passed away--but nearly a decade after thsi was published. Seems like he could have pumped out a few more and had Ramage finally retire. Oh well. It's been fun to read this series. I've reviewed all the books in the series, so have a look at them to see if this is what you want. I enjoyed them.

Run out of ideas 7 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I have read the whole of this series of books and this is the last. I had looked forward to this book since Ramage has at last moved from a frigate to a ship of the line and I wanted to see how things would be different. Disappointingly we find almost nothing out about any differences apart from the extra men on board and that is only mentioned in passing. Ramage just sails it as if it is a large frigate.
Either Pope did not understand the differences or could not be bothered to do the research.

I agree with the other reviewers that the story lacks depth and everything is too easy. However I do think that the final two paragraphs are a `wrap up' by Pope and he never intended to write any more. That's probably a good thing becasue it feels as though he has run out of ideas.

I have read the full series by O'Brian, the Kydd series by Stockwin and the Bolitho series by Kent. A large part of my enjoyment is learning about life at sea and on land at that time period. O'Brian provides the most detail and this declines in the books by Stockwin then Kent and Pope brings up the rear.

However if this is of little interest and you just want an adventure story then these books are OK.

Ramage is, unexpectedly, unless you are a reader, promoted to command a 74. And he is of course (??) allowed to bring the entire crew of the Calypso with him. Well, it works in the narrative, although I believe something like that never actually happened. For the rest, it is a typical Ramage-adventure, with gales, brave seamen, and Ramage buckling all the swash imaginable. Perhaps not the best of Mr. Pope's efforts, not the worst - and if you like the series, as I do, that is in fact enough. In the end, it turned out to be the last of the series, which is too bad, although - truth be told - perhaps even Mr. Pope's huge fund of ideas was to some extend exhausted.
