Roxanne Courland had been in love with Charles Afforde for ten years, she first saw him one Christmas all those years ago when she was a mere girl of fourteen, and he was a guest of her uncle at Hollowhurst Castle. During the past ten years word of his reputation with the ladies grew. Roxanne's brother Charles never wanted to be master of Hollowhurst, and went travelling abroad, leaving Roxanne to run the estate. Then out of the blue Charles Afforde, now knighted turns up at the castle, with the news that he has bought it lock stock and barrel from her brother. Devastated Roxanne moves to a small house nearby that was left to her in her uncles will. But Sir Charles is not content with the situation and pursues Roxanne to marry him.
This is a first read for me by this author, I liked the idea for the story very much, what I did not like was it's execution, the two main characters came across as quite cynical, their interactions, I'm sure were meant to be sparkling and witty. But IMO they just seemed to be antagonistIc. I was not too keen on the heroine she seemed to be hyperactive in her thoughts as well as actions she was quite exhausting. The hero spent most of his time in self denial, which was odd as he seemed quite an intelligent character. The love scenes were more about lust than love.I was not totally convinced of their relationship.
