George Thomas used to be in Encyclopedia Britannica, which is where I stumbled over his incredible story half a century ago. Now, he seems to have been forgotten. George Thomas conquered India in defiance of the East India Companies and various Indian Maharajahs at the end of the eighteenth century. He was an illiterate, press-ganged irishman who actually ruled most of India for all of a week. The full story hasn't been told yet, but this book goes into enough detail to whet the appetite for further investigation.

An Irish mercenary who set up a kingdom in 19th century India -- a true tale . 13 Feb 2008
By Jesse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is like a novel but is actually history -- a true story of an Irish man who made late 18th century- early 19th century India his home- raised a state in the turbulent lands of North India with an army of native soldiers trained in European warfare and who were loyal to him to the end -- a tale that would sound like a novel -- how come they never made a movie about him.

I have seen his palace and his forts -- important landmarks-- they are still called after his name George- Palace , Bridge , Fort in native dialects. And that is not because the British wanted it like that but because he left a indelible mark on the regional history.
