Product Description

The spirited child--often called "difficult" or "strong-willed"--
can easily overwhelm parents, leaving them feeling frustrated and inadequate.Spirited kids are, in fact, simply "more"--by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. Through vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka offers parents emotional support and proven strategies for handling their spirited child. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:

  • Understand your child's--and your own--temperamental traits
  • Plan for success with a simple four-step program
  • Discover the power of positive--rather than negative--labels
  • Cope with tantrums and blowups when they do occur
  • Develop strategies for handling mealtimes, bedtimes, holidays, school and many other situations

Filled with personal insight and authorative advice, Raising Your Spirited Child can help make parenting the joy it should be, rather than the trial it can be.

Does your child resist going new places, refuse to wear a coat when it's freezing outside, and fall apart at the slightest change in plans? My son does, and for the longest time I thought I must be doing something wrong. Fortunately, I found this wonderful book and it saved my sanity (if not my life)!Raising Your Spirited Child will help you understand that your child's behavior has little to do with you; it's just the way he/she is. Rather than trying to "change" your child, you will learn techniques to respond constructively to your child's intense reactions and how to work through difficult situations together. After awhile you'll begin to predict your child's response to a particular situation, know how to prepare him/her (and yourself) for what's about to happen, and maybe even circumvent disaster!I first read this book about five years ago when my son was in preschool; I recently re-read the book and it is just as relevant for my eight-year-old as it was when he was younger. Raising Your Spirited Child is a favorite book to loan to friends; I have even recommended it to my child's teachers!

This book is very infomative on the needs and subtle differences you need to be aware of when dealing with spirited children. It mostly focuses on the child and how to adapt to make situations easier. I believe it is important to use positive lables but this alone will not change entrenched automatic behavior. With our spirited child setting clear limits and enabling him to adapt and grow was what made the biggest difference. It was hard work but our child is now much happier and confident as a result. A good book on discipline and limit setting is needed as a companion to the spirited child. I highly recommend reading "Ain't Misbehavin" and then read "The Manipulative Child". These books show where the parent needs to make changes and how the child must learn to adapt. Walking on egg shells and allowing the child to operate in his/her "preferred style" can escalate and reinforce unwanted behaviors. I read "Raising your spirited child" after we had corrected our childs behavior and found it useful and helpful but not a solution on its own.

This book is a life saver! It's my child inside and out (yes, we deal with the lint balls and seams in socks, too!). For "spirited" children and the parents of "spirited" children, this book is a real breakthrough. No longer do we need to be ashamed and feel like we've done something wrong. Kurcinka has a very loving and understanding approach. This approach is much needed as it is common thought that these kids are "bad" and "unmanagable". Traditional discipline programs just aren't cut out for "spirited" children. This book gives you the tools you need to redirect your child's spirit--not kill it. It is filled with love, warmth, wisdom and hope. Two thumbs WAY up!!!
