Rough Riders book #9, Raising Kane, is one of my favorites in the series. Rancher Kane McKay was one of the wild McKay boys for years, raising hell while seducing most of the women in the tri-county area. But over the last two years, Kane has calmed down, and joined the little buddies program. When Hayden, Kane's little buddy calls him because his mom is in the hospital, Kane rushes to Ginger's side. While Kane and Ginger shared a brief kiss months back, nothing has been said of it since; neither wants to jeopardize the relationship Kane and Hayden have built through the little buddies program. But with Ginger's immobilizing injury, Kane volunteers to move in for the weekend and take care of the single mom and her son. Living together in such close quarters, it is unlikely they'll be able to control the heat that has built between them. While Kane and Ginger may not face all the drama that some of the previous Rough Riders lovers have had to deal with, I thought the change made this book very romantic. The story didn't deal with battling personal demons, it dealt with good old fashioned romance, and falling in love.
I think this book would be a good start to the Rough Riders series, because neither Kane nor Ginger are bringing in emotional baggage that has been built up over the previous books. There is a scene with Kane and Ginger in book #7, but nothing critical to Raising Kane. If you like the romance of this book, you can always backtrack on the series. A note about the chronological order of the stories, book #9 actually lands after story #7 Shoulda been a Cowboy, and before book #8 All Jacked Up. If you're curious about the Rough Riders series, I've read most of the books so you can check out my reviews for more info.
