Product Description

Product Description

Society's confusing and often contradictory messages to girls and women make raising a daughter an especially daunting responsibility for any parent. Girls are born believing that they can do anything, but growing up they face new obstacles, as their bodies and social roles begin to change. In Raising A Daughter, Jeanne and Don Elium address these challenges and guide parents through each stage of a girl's development, from infancy through middle childhood, the teen years, and early adulthood.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye opener, 15 Sep 2005
By A Customer
I picked up this book because I thought it would give me more insight into how to raise a daughter as I have two older boys and had previously read and reread Raising Boys by Steve Biddulph, which is an insightful and informative book.

Im glad I read this and think that it gives a gentle approach not unlike its alternative (in my eyes). I liked its down to earth language and how it was layed out. I particularly liked the chapters on stereotyping and how we think that a girl should behave and how that is affected by how mothers directly influence their daughters outlook/behaviour/expectations etc in life.

Everyone with a little girl, or even a lanky teenager, should give it a look.

1.0 out of 5 stars long winded and not very practical, 19 Feb 2006
By A Customer
After reading raising boys by steve biddulph I was expecting this book to be a long similar lines. However I found it to be very deep and full of theory which were quite interesting, but not much practical information.
I found alot of the points they were making could easily be the same for boys and the general theme of the book seems to suggest to bring your daughter up in the same way as your sons and cut out all girly things eg make sure they play with boys toys and that their bedrooms not full of traditional girls toys!,

4.0 out of 5 stars Dad's eyes are more open and aware!, 26 Feb 1999
By A Customer
I was given this book as a gift after my daughter was born last summer. Previously, I had two boys which I could relate to since I am a male and was raised in a family of all boys! Wow, this book was very eye-opening for me. How easily we forget how we see the world and unconciously perform actions which may have an undesired outcome on our child's development. Although still an infant, this book helped me realize that I already treat my daughter differently than my older boys. I will definitely re-read the Elium's book in a year or so, and will likely revisit it time and again. I would not advise this to be the 'one' book on how to raise a daughter. I also don't necessarily agree with every point. Overall, though, this is a useful guide full of interesting and thought-provoking material.
