Synopsis
Lorraine Hansberry's play, A Raisin in the Sun, has enjoyed a charmed life since hitting Broadway in 1959. The original Broadway cast took the play to the big screen in 1961, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Sidney Poitier, and now the 2008 adaptation, featuring Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs, makes the same transition. The plot follows a 1950s African American family who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a $10,000 insurance check. Walter Lee (Combs) wants to spend the money to buy a liquor store, while his mother, Lena (Phylicia Rashad), wants to purchase a house. Walter's pregnant wife, Ruth (Audra McDonald), sides with Lena, while also considering getting an abortion. Trouble strikes when Walter fritters most of the money away on his bad investment and Lena stirs up racial conflict by putting a down payment on a house in a white neighbourhood. This adaptation, directed by Kenny Leon, embodies much of the controversy and fine performances that made the original production so memorable.

I love this film the story is superb. I wasn't sure about P. Diddy's role in the film but I am so glad that he didn't put me off buy this version. He was very good in the role of the dreamer Walter Lee. Lorraine Hansberry's novel has been excellently depicted in this film and whilst I prefer the original film A Raisin In The Sun [DVD] [1961] with Sidney Poitier this is a close second.
Phylicia Rashad as the mother struggling to keep her family together deserved an oscar, but great African American Actors are always overlooked. Buy this film you will not be disappointed.

I was very eager to watch this film given the reasonably good cast. I was however disappointed. Whilst there is an appriciation that was a remake of an old classic more could have done to update it. I was waited eagerly for something to spark but was left disppointed. The film was somewhat flat and was not sorry to see the end.

What would happen if someone in your family inherited alot of money or you won the lottery. This film gives you the low down on the selfish tactics of what could happen when you decide your dream is worth pursuing with somebody elses money over the rest of the family. Is money worth breaking up a family? What is more important ask yourself that question, then buy the film

A raising in the Sun
Subject of race relations covered thought provokingly, demonstrating that the love of money takes you on a hiding to no where. Excellent movie.
