When I hear the mere mention of Elvin Bishop, nothing but fond memories and smiling faces come to mind.
I remember hearing him for the first time back when I was a teen and Mr. Bishop was playing with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. However, I never really got to know just how fantastic Elvin Bishop was as a guitar player/singer until I heard "Rock My Soul" circa 1971, sitting on the bedroom floor with my best friend Cathi McCain, smoking' "butterballs" (I ain't talking turkey either) and groovin' to this southern brand of blues-rock.
Fast forward almost 40 years and you will not find me smoking butterballs anymore, but Elvin Bishop is still bending those strings, performing great music. If you don't believe me, then on May 17th go out and get "Elvin Bishop's Raisin' Hell Revue" (Delta Groove Music).
It is comprised of thirteen amazing yet familiar tracks, "Calling All Cows", the fore mentioned "Rock My Soul", but most notable on the record is "Fooled Around and Fell in Love". This is the first time since the original that this song has been recorded. This time it is soulfully performed by John Nemeth instead of Mickey Thomas.
As good as Mickey Thomas was on the original, in my opinion, Mr. Nemeth's rendition is superior. He adds an element of soul that wasn't necessarily missing on the original, but was certainly absent. What I mean by that is Mickey Thomas belted out the tune his way and it was a huge success, but Mr. Nemeth has a more soulful style to his voice, and even though he stays true to the original, his style allows him to make the song his very own. When an artist accomplishes covering a song, even though this isn't really a cover - it was written by Mr. Bishop - until now it was considered Mr. Thomas' song. Mr. Nemeth, against all odds, accomplished the nearly impossible task of taking possession of the tune.
If that were not enough, Mr. Nemeth turns around and does it all over again with the incredibly famous Ozzie Cadena/Herman Lubinsky tune, "The Night Time Is the Right Time". This time he may not accomplish the feat of making it his own, but is reverent to the way the song was meant to be performed, making it an enormous amount of fun to listen too never the less.
I have only barely touched the tip of the proverbial iceberg here. This incredible compilation of songs was recorded live on the legendary Blues Cruise in May of 2010. It catapulted right to the top five of my favorite live recordings of all time. In addition, it most likely will make it to my top 10 list at the end of this year.
It is absolutely a fantastic addition to my collection. I suggest you add it to yours as well.
