I don't necessarily agree with the "if this album would have been released during the grunge years it would have been huge" argument but this album certainly deserves to be bigger than it is. In the UK Swervedriver were lumped in with the Shoegazer crowd. They certainly share some similarities with bands like Ride, Slowdive, et al but that doesn't tell the full story.
People often refer to the rockier influences of Swervedriver to differentiate them from the Shoegazing crowd. True, I'm sure that The Stooges, Hawkwind and The MC5 feature in the band member's record collections but that again does them a dis-service.
Swervedriver certainly use plenty of distortion in their songs and are certainly a bit heavier than other shoegaze bands but what they brought to the table was a sense of dynamics and purpose that was missing from many of their contemporaries. Never content to let waves of fuzz simply meander on aimlessly there was always a sense that there was a reason for things in a Swervedriver song.
Consider "Son Of Mustang Ford", quite simply one of the most stunning guitar songs ever. It's betters anything ever attempted by the more famous Sonic Youth, Mudhoney or Dinosaur JR. Bands that Swervedriver are often compared to.
Consider also "Lead Me Where You Dare", clearly influenced by The Stone Roses and with a melody line to die for. This song wouldn't have been out of place on The Stone Roses' debut album. This highlights another facet of Swervedriver which isn't often touched on - their sense of melody. This melodic sense became more pronounced and more prominent with successive albums.
I just wanted to write a review that avoided the cliches that normally abound with Swervedriver, i.e. they write driving songs, they are a bit rockier shoegaze, etc. To my mind Swervedriver have produced some of the best guitar music ever. Perhaps the greatest compliment that I could pay Swervedriver is that I still feel the same way about this album as when I first bought it - almost 20 years ago. Although it has clear influences I still don't think that there's ever been another album quite like this one. It is amazing and I would heartily recommend it.
