Over the last few years my reading habits have definitely changed and I'm finding that I'm reading a lot more romantic fiction novels than before. Also I'm finding that I enjoy reading series of books especially when they are set in specific locations such as Lisa Kleypas' Friday Harbor series.

As Rainshadow Road was the second book in the series, I naturally had to buy and read the first book, Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor, before I started reading this one. Although they can be read as standalone books as completely different storylines but some of the characters, the Nolan family and Maggie, do make appearances in both books.

Lucy Marinn is a talented glass artist who moved to San Juan Island to live with her boyfriend Kevin. She thinks she has the perfect life; a job she loves and living with the man she's one day going to marry. So she is caught off guard when Kevin tells her that he's no longer in love with her and has fallen for someone else ... her sister Alice!

From the start we can tell that the relationship between the two sisters, Lucy and Alice, is not particularly close and that Alice has been spoilt by the whole family ever since a childhood illness.

When Kevin and Alice announce their engagement, they are initially surprised at the disapproval of her parents. So Kevin decides that Alice's parents would accept the situation more if Lucy was in a new relationship herself so he asks an acquaintance, Sam Nolan, if he'll date her little knowing that Sam had already met Lucy and was interested in her anyway.

Sam bumped into Lucy when she was at her lowest point, hours after being told by Kevin that he no longer loved her, and he felt an instant attraction to her. They soon start to see each other but on a 'friends with benefits' basis as neither want are committed relationship. But can this really work?

The characters in this book are everyday people that you can relate to and can't help but fall in love with. Throw in a little bit of magic to the story, not too much to put me off, and you've got the perfect recipe for a relaxing read on a Sunday afternoon.

I'm pleased to see that the next book in the series, Dream Lake, is due out in August and the first chapter can be found at the back of this book. It sounds like another interesting read involving Alex Nolan and a ghost...

I enjoyed the novella that introduced this series, Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor, and was looking forward to seeing what Lisa Kleypas would do with a full-length book. Unfortunately, I don't think the result is up to Kleypas' normal high standards.

There is a maxim that says that in romance novels there is never a new plot, but a good author will find a way to make a story their own. Kleypas usually does that via evocative writing, specifically, excellent characterization. But in this case, although she has a beautiful setting, the descriptions are somewhat awkward, and although the characters should be interesting (a glassmaker and a vinyard owner), they are somewhat flat. In addition, Lucy's character is inconsistent; she is initially described as wary of all relationships, but she seems to have little trouble trusting Sam and developing a relationship, and the fallout from her breakup with Kevin is so minimized it is non-existent.

The biggest problem that I had with the book was the use of magic. In Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor "magic" is used symbolically to represent the power of a child's imagination, innocence, and trust. It adds to the emotional development of the characters and their relationship. In Rainshadow Road the magic is literal. However it adds nothing to the plot, and at times it seems that it is used in place of character development, rather than to supplement it.

Despite it's flaws, and as long as you aren't expecting one of Kleypas' best works, Rainshadow Road is a decent contemporary romance, and I am going to read the next book in the series.

(On a side note- the cover synopsis for the book, although mostly factually accurate, isn't really true to the story line.)

If I could live in Friday Harbour, I most definitely would as I want all the characters in this series to be my friends. They are such a beautiful group of people. I took this book on holiday with me and read it in one day - an ideal beach read where you get lost in a world full of Southern grace and charm.
This book is sprinkled with a frosting of magical realism, very subtle but enough to give you hope that magic really does exist out there. Lisa Kleypas can happily sit on my bookshelves alongside Sarah Addison Allen.
The author brought Friday Harbour alive for me, I could almost smell and taste how wonderful it was. The characters are charming and I defy you not to be attracted to the Nolan brothers. Don't worry ladies, there are three of them to choose from - no fighting. The Nolan brothers come from a really bad background - all of them suffered in silence as their family fell apart while their parents drunk themselves to death. Followed by the accidental death of their sister, Victoria, the brothers have to come together to look after their orphaned niece and each book follows their desperate attempts to escape romantic encounters only to discover that love really does makes the world go round.
This book follows Sam as he helps out a friend by dating his ex. Only Sam doesn't expect to fall for Lucy and it soon becomes apparent that their is something rather special about this couple, they are both so warm and wonderful together and sparks really do fly; I found myself sighing with contentment. Just beautiful.
By the penultimate chapter, I was in tears, it was just so romantic how it ended.
This series has definitely become a firm favourite with me; one I will return to again and again in the future. I really hope someone picks it up and turns it into a TV series as I would definitely watch it.
